Need suggestions

We just bought a house with a large fenced in back yard. I have 2 daughters ages 4 & 5. I have wanted a puppy/dog for a long time but wanted to make sure we had a house (w/fenced in yard first) and not an apartment to bring him/her home to. AND let me say without a doubt we are going to adopt/rescue a puppy/dog, no changing my mind on that one!

So....

Anyone have any suggestions on how to pick a good rescue?

Anyone have suggestions on smaller dog breeds that temperaments would mesh well with 2 little girls who will want to snuggle, love, play, dress up and possible drive completely mad? lol

  • Check Petfinder.  That should help you locate groups in your area (yay rescuing!).  I think if you search there, you can begin to get an idea of dogs in your area.  As far as breeds, I personally think it depends on the dog, not the breed.

  • I agree with starting with petfinder. With kids, I would try to get one from a rescue where the dog has been fostered with kids. A lot of times you will see the write up rave about the dog loving kids, if they do, and that's the kind of dog you want to pick - regardless of breed.

We love to play on petfinder so if you want to tell us the general area where you live, we can help you look :o

  • For organization, ask around, look at Petfinder, and find out who your local shelters will allow to pull dogs.  Make sure they have their act together and that the dogs are getting basic vet care, come neutered, and are well taken care of.

As for dog, I encourage you to consider what you're looking for in a dog outside of being good with kids.  I'm willing to bet you'll find a dog that's good with kids in most breeds so think about size, energy level, health issues you may or may not be able to deal with, that kind of thing.  How much time are you willing to dedicate to exercise and training?  Are you looking for a puppy or older dog?  These questions should help you narrow down some of your options and from there I'd look for dogs that are being fostered or have been around kids.

Also, as important as it is to find a dog that will "mesh well" with your kids, it is at least as important that the kids respect the dog.  Make sure the kids know what kind of behavior is and is not acceptable around dogs and do not leave them unattended.  Kids can be scary to even the most well-mannered dog and it takes only one time for things to go very wrong.

All that said, I'm sure you will find a dog that is a great fit for your family and as your kids grow up, they will thank you for letting them have a pet.  It's such a great experience. Smile

  • Ask the rescue to do a home visit with the dog.  We did this with our dog to make sure she got along with the cats and to see how she did at our house.  Worked out great for us.
