We had to put my Boxer down 2 months ago.

I'm still heartbroken. Sad

We rescued our Boxer when she was about 3 yrs old, she lived to be 13.

My DH eventually wants to get another dog, but this time a Boxer puppy. One thing we missed w/ our Boxer Sable was her puppy years (pictures etc.)

I'm not sure though. I'm afraid how the puppy would be w/ my 19 month old DD and my 3 1/2 yr old DS. Any insight on this would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • I don't even have a dog so I'm not sure my opinion counts, but I do have a 17 month old kid and I can't imagine having any puppy, let alone a boxer, with him - never mind too kids. But, I know some highly energetic moms that would rock it, so if that's you, hats off to ya :o)

Personally, I think getting one at 3 was perfect - pas the hyper, chewing, jumping puppy stage and still young enough to enjoy a long life with the family.

ETA: PS, I'm so sorry for your loss :o

  • If you decide on a puppy, call a boxer rescue. Don't buy a puppy; they usually come from puppy mills.
  • Well the Puppy is going to be a puppy, hyper, playful and of course filled with all the puppy habits you will have to break!

We got our  husky mix when dd was about 5 months old, not gonna lie it was hard, add a husband in the army and no family near by and it was rough, but imo so worth it! Now I've got a 5 month old dachshund in the mix and while its certainly not always easy as long as you have a good routine you will be fine! Puppies and Babies together are a blast!

Of course kids will be kids with a puppy. My home is a mad house by 7 pm everynight! I wouldn't have it any other way! I couldn't imagine my house without a dog i it!

    Good Luck!

I would most certainly call a boxer rescue place.

  • I have a 7 month old boxer and two DDs, 2.5 and 5.5.  We got Seamus when he was 9 weeks old.  Not gonna lie its been crazy at times but so awesome to see my girls with him.  My experience with getting a puppy and having young kids hasn't been bad.  Seamus was really easy to house train, crate train, and train basic commands in general.  Boxers are really smart dogs so I think that helps.  We have had to work with him in understanding that my DD2 isn't a puppy mate.  We've had to have her show him she was in charge and not him by simple commands.  Other than that I wouldn't change a thing. Good luck in what you decide.
  • We got a boxer pup in November and I think I forgot how crazy the puppy stage is! She has endless energy, where our 4y/o boxer was starting to get lazy so she bugs the crao out of him and runs around like a demon non stop it feels like. I don't think I'll be getting a puppy again.. But I don't think I'll ever get anything but boxers :)
  • I'm a huge fan of puppies, but I would absolutely wait to get a puppy until your kids are older.

Puppies take SO MUCH time and energy, and with kids around, it can be difficult to find that time and energy.

If you want another dog right away, I would go with an adult rescue who has been fostered in a home with kids.

  • What about meeting in the middle and looking into dogs that are maybe 8 - 12 months?  Still very puppy-like but (in my experience) much more manageable than babies.
