Painting raised garden beds

I saw a pic on Pinterest that I love with a raised bed vegetable gardens with the wood beds painted lavender.  It's painted on both the inside and the outside, which I would imagine is a bad idea.  However, do you think it's safe to paint the outside of the untreated wood?

Re: Painting raised garden beds

  • I would think it would be a PITA to keep looking good from year to year.  I think the natural patina of aged wood would look best.  Let the plants & flowers draw the attention, not the color of the bed.

Agreed, if you paint it one year, you will be painting every year from here on out. I would rather spend the time on gardening.

  • You could maybe try a colored stain to achieve the look you liked but paint is going to peel, especially with a raised bed where you're going to be watering a lot. Or at least it would in my backyard.
