I'm not really sure why she is intentionally being cruel to her child.

Reading stories like these makes me so happy I have a sane MIL. I don't konw how I'd react to someone like her.

I think your H should just tell her that he will no longer tolerate any mean or otherwise unpleasant comments about you or his marriage, and every time she says something, hang up on her or leave.

I know it's easier said than done, but I completely agree with this.  She sounds toxic.

How does he react when she says these things?

I am surprised he still willingly visits/sees her.  I have a pretty awful MIL that has done some horrible things but shes learned very quickly that behavior won't be tolerated.  A few missed holidays and she decided she can keep her thoughts to herself.
