kennel cough

I just adopted 2 dogs on saturday, and one of them has a kennel cough.  It seems like it's gotten worse since we brought them home (from the stress of moving?).  The foster mom gave us antibiotics for it, which we've been giving her, and they have an appointment scheduled with our vet on Wed.

How do I keep my other dog from getting it?  She hasn't shown any signs, but I really want to keep her healthy.  It would be hard to keep them apart, since the one with the cough cries when she is separated from the healthy one, and I don't want to put extra stress on her.  Any tips?

Re: kennel cough

  • We adopted a dog with kennel cough, and our dog already at home didn't have it. She was already up to date on her vaccinations, so that helped. Our vet said the only thing we could really do was monitor that they didn't drink out of the same water bowl (speads w/ saliva). As long as the kennel cough dog keeps taking his/her meds, the other one should be ok.

I volunteer at a shelter, and it's very common for kennel cough not to appear right away. Don't be surpised if dog #2 gets it, if he/she starts getting that hack, just call the shelter/foster mom. They may have some extra pills for you. Otherwise, a pack of pills from the vet isn't too expensive.

Honestly...I wouldn't worry about keeping them separate for now.  Both dogs have been exposed already, and in the grand scheme of things, KC is mild, and both dogs getting it s less stressful than them being separated right now.

  • Thanks for the advice!  They're my first dogs, so I'm freaking out a little bit.
