I'm sick of this local news story...

Ughhhh I keep hearing about this left and right but I'm going to post it anyway...

A lesbian at a Christian college was told by the Dean to remove her "Out... Proud... Lesbian" banner on her FB page. Students who attend this school sign a contract and one of the sections specifically mentions no sex before marriage and how God created man and woman blahblahblah.

Anyway, the Dean never threatened to kick her out of school, like she claims, but basically said she may have to move off-campus if she's not willing to comply. And I am just really annoyed that she went to the news about this - when she signed a contract. My thought: Be as lesbian as you want, but don't post about it on FB. I actually have a gay friend at this school and he's bothered by this issue/her choices. The people that I know that have attended this school have drank underage, have had sex before marriage (well, I don't know about everyone), etc, but they don't go posting photos on FB or mentioning their behavior.

Does this seem to be annoying to anyone else?

  • I don't see a problem with putting on Facebook that you're a lesbian, I do see a problem with not wanting to comply with their rules. It's a Christian College, FFS.

Then where can she post about it? Is Twitter ok? Can she pin "lesbian" pins on Pinterest? Can she wear a rainbow shirt? Or hold hands with her girlfriend in the grocery store?

I think that religious homosexuals are often persecuted for wanting to be true to their sexuality and also wanting to worship. That's not fair.

Unless the contract specified that the school had discretion over what students are allowed to post on Facebook, I'm on her side all the way.

Okay, valid point about twitter/pinterest, etc. And I definitely agree that it's not fair however, the contract does state something about public and FB is a public networking site.

I think I'm just more annoyed that she went to the reporters without even having a face-to-face with the Dean (communication was sent via email). And she told the news she was facing expulsion, when the only 'penalty' was for her to move off-campus because she wasn't following "their community" standards.

I definitely agree with this statement, hands down. I'm even surprised a college is allowed to discriminate but it's a private institution so they're allowed to basically do what they want. And students have the option to choose a different school.

  • I'm certain the contract specifically lays out the behaviors that are unacceptable. Generally with a Christian college drinking, sex outside of marriage, and homosexuality are listed. So if you admit to being gay, you broke the contract. Has nothing to do with Facebook per se. Why would you go to a college with that contract, if you want to be that open about your homosexuality. Go to a college without that contract and be as open as you want.

Yes, I definitely agree with you on that one. That's kind of BS.

Obviously there are two sides to every story. For some reason this woman wants to attend this religious institution and she wants to be able to be "out" while doing so.

In my opinion, she should be able to do so.

But she can't, and she signed a contract indicating she was fully aware that she can't. So she has no real basis for a lawsuit. That school, I'm assuming, is completely private and receives no government funds, so they are allowed to have a contract like that. I would not want to go to a school that had a contract specifically saying I could not live my life in such a fundamental way. There are tons of schools, most of which are probably more affordable, so she CHOSE to go there.

  • Being a lesbian does not even violate the contract.

It's a banner.. with words.. It's not a picture of her eating out her girlfriend.

Being a lesbian does not = being sexually active.
