France question

I'm doing a group project for a business class and our topic is France. We're good to go on all the "official" statistics but can anyone fill me in on some social trends that are happening?

 Thanks, I appreciate it.

Re: France question

  • I don't live there but I find the clashes with north African immigrants to be quite an interesting topic.

I'm fascinated that in schools you can't wear head scarfs, crosses, or star of David. Or did they repel that. I haven't kept up unfortunately. And not being able to wear full hijab. I watched a really interesting interview on that talking with the women.

Religious expression is definitely still a hot topic. I have two devout Muslim colleagues (one from Algeria, one from California) who were supposed to transfer to France along with their project, but they backed out because they felt they wouldn't be able to practice their religion fully/comfortably. The example that really tipped the scale was that their wives weren't allowed to wear the hijab in their visa photos.

Yes, women cannot wear full hijabs - they're being fined if they do! It's crazy.

  • School is secular in France as it should be, but unfortunately in fact isn't, in Italy.
