I'm thinking about getting a Silhouette and making stuff along with other crafty bits and pieces to sell at a local market.
Has anyone done anything like this?
Re: Selling your stuff
I sell things that I make with my Cricut and SCAL software. I would love a Silhouette but there's nothing wrong with my Cricut so I won't be getting one for a while.
I sell anything I can put a vinyl decal on, like tiles, buckets, cups, decals for cars, on and on. I do custom work with SCAL so it really opens up what I can do with it. I have a blog but I also put everything on FB. I set up at craft shows occasionally, but it's a lot of work and I don't always make what I put into them.
I don't use a Silhouette (what kind of stuff would you sell?), but we do lots of craft shows and farmers market type events in the summer. I would make sure you're not only accounting for cost of your materials in your pricing, but also for your time.
And work on perfecting it before you start selling it. Nothing sucks more than to sell something that you've spent a lot of time perfecting and have someone come in and sell their hastily thrown together stuff for half the price and make you "look bad". We have someone who buys wholesale and then sells it at our farmers market, even though it's against by-laws. We make pettiskirts -- from fabric on the bolt -- and she buys them wholesale from China and sells them for 1/4 of the price.
Sorry, that was a whole 'nother rant. Good luck! Be sure to share pictures.
