Itchy skin - Food issue??

We got a new dog a couple of weeks ago.  She is about 6 months old and is a boxer mix.  She has been itching a lot lately and I am wondering if there is a different kind of food we could give her or anything else we can do to help.. Right now we feed her Iams puppy and we have recently given her a bath with an oatmeal shampoo.

Thanks!

Re: Itchy skin - Food issue??

  • Even if it's not a food allergy issue, I'd upgrade to a higher-quality kibble.

If you want to rule out food allergies, try a grain-free, novel-protein food (like California Natural Grain-Free, avoid chicken-based formula). Make sure any treats do not contain grains, either. See if that helps.

  • Ditto RHB, I would upgrade her food and switch to a protein she has not tried yet like lamb, fish, etc.
  • You also may want to find another shampoo that does not contain oatmeal.  It can be irritating to some dogs' skin.

  • Check out this site for better foods - it compares price range too.

Better food helped my cat with a flaky coat and has helped several other pets on this board.

Iams is only 2 stars but 3 $$$, whereas Taste of the Wild is 5 stars for the same 3 $$$, for example.

  • My pit has some serious allergy issues, so did the boxer we had before her. I did a food allergy rule-out test to figure out their triggers, for the boxer it was chicken and beef, same with the Pit, only add wheat to the mix! I finally found a lamb/sweet potatoe food that works for them both! My pit is also allergic to grass, so she is on zyrtec daily as well as fish oil.... heck she's as bad as I am!
