Not to push where I work, but get your new phone from Best Buy. Cell phone carriers do NOT offer insurance for iPhones. Best buy does and it's 14.99/mo (in most places) and covers everything but loss. It's better than AppleCare too. Seriously. I hate to be a hoar and push where I work but the benefits of Black Tie are amazing.

Re: Seshat411

  • Aside from insurance, what's the difference in buying from Best Buy versus going into the AT&T store? I've never had a smartphone so I don't know how it works. Like - if I get the phone from the provider, can I only get insurance through Apple? Can I still set up the data plan through my provider? Or would I have to buy the phone through them, then go to the provider and get it all set up? Sorry if that was confusing.

I heard somewhere that you can buy a case through the provider, and get insurance through that (if the phone breaks when dropped in the case, you are covered) but I dn't know if that's true.

  • All authorized dealers (including BB) can offer insurance for the iPhone.

  • Then plans are the same at Best Buy as at AT&T. If you get the iPhone 4s, you can still get insurance through Best Buy, just bring your receipt from apple and your phone so they can make sure it isn't damaged.

I've never heard of the second paragraph. I know a good case for the iPhone is the OtterBox. It's pricey but for what it is, it works.

And Best Buy also has a device that hooks into your phone so you can swipe a credit card and all that.

  • Gah, now I don't know what to do. All the Best Buys around here are awful. But I don't want to miss out on anything.

I just switched my plan over from my mom's yesterday (we were all under one big family plan) and am upgrading today hopefully. If I can get insurance through BB (assuming it's cheaper) and still buy from the provider I might do that. Mostly because I feel like I need to talk to the AT&T people to make sure everything on the account is set up properly. They have fvcked up our plan royally more than once.

I have the Square reader already, again assuming it's the right kind. I just need to set everything up online.

Sprint and AT&T don't cover the iPhone.

Yeah. Apple care, you have a deductible, you can only have 2 claims per policy and it doesn't cover what Best Buy's Back tie does.

Black tie covers drops, cracks in the screen due to drops, normal wear and tear (home button, volume or power buttons no longer work), heat and humidity, drops in water, water gets in it, etc. Most carriers cover some of this, but if the little indicator shows ANY sign of water damage, they don't cover it through insurance.

There is no deductible for claims, unlimited claims, and you get a loaner phone if you need one.

    Well that's just inconvenient.

Watch, all this talk about the iPhone and I'll end up walking out with a Droid.

LOL! Best Buy covers them for 9.99. All carriers cover them, but most have a $100 deductible if you need to make a claim

Authorized dealers, not corporate. I've worked at both. I know the At&t dealers sells insurance on their Iphones.

For instance, BB is an authorized dealer. It's just a franchise.
