Newbie race question

I'm running my first race this weekend (minus one 5K last year) & I have a few beginner questions. The race is a 15K, in case that matters. . .

1) do you carry your phone? If so, what do you wear/how do you secure it? If not, how do you hook up with your group/ride after the run?

2) Do you bring your own fuel, even if the race provides it?

3) How early do you typically get to a race?

4) As a general rule, are there typically porta potties fairly frequently on the race route? I will definitely need a minimum of one stop along the way.

Anyone else doing the Shamrock Run in Portland this weekend?

Re: Newbie race question

  • 1) do you carry your phone? If so, what do you wear/how do you secure it? If not, how do you hook up with your group/ride after the run? No, I don't carry my phone. We cheer each other on so we pick a side of the chute to meet on and wait at the finish line.

    2) Do you bring your own fuel, even if the race provides it? Yes, I bring my own because I like to use what I train with.

    3) How early do you typically get to a race? 15-60 minutes prior to the race depending on how big the race it.

    4) As a general rule, are there typically porta potties fairly frequently on the race route? I will definitely need a minimum of one stop along the way. Longer races usually do.

    1) do you carry your phone? If so, what do you wear/how do you secure it? If not, how do you hook up with your group/ride after the run?

Usually, but my DH rarely brings his.  We normally say, "Hey I will meet you in front of bag check after the race or by the purple pig."  He knows my estimated finish time and will watch for me at the finish or just meet me at our designated spot.  The only time we ever had a problem was meeting someone after the Peachtree (55K runners).

    2) Do you bring your own fuel, even if the race provides it?

I usually bring gu or a gummy candy with me.  I don't bring water or gatorade.

    3) How early do you typically get to a race?

At least an hour, depends on where the race is and traffic.

    4) As a general rule, are there typically porta potties fairly frequently on the race route? I will definitely need a minimum of one stop along the way.

Yes, but I try to not stop during the race.  I have found hydrating the day before the race and having very little to drink before the race keeps me from having to stop.  I usually use the porta potties 2-3X before the race.

  • 1) do you carry your phone? If so, what do you wear/how do you secure it? If not, how do you hook up with your group/ride after the run?  no phone - we talk about a meeting place before the race.

    2) Do you bring your own fuel, even if the race provides it?  i always bring my own gels if im going to use them. i don't bring my own water.

    3) How early do you typically get to a race? depends on the size of the race. the bigger the race, the earlier I arrive. I always arrive at least an hour early - but I freak out over the smallest things - the earlier I arrive the sooner i can relax.

    4) As a general rule, are there typically porta potties fairly frequently on the race route? I will definitely need a minimum of one stop along the way.  depends on the size of the race & the race organizers. if there is a course map they usually say where there will be porto-potties located. I'd say in a 15k there will probably be at least 2 sets.

This. I hardly drink anything before the race. Coffee w/ breakfast and maybe a few sips of water.

I wish this was an option - I'm a mom of two and the bladder isn't what it used to be. ;-) I tried this on my long run this weekend, and . . . without oversharing, it was a problem.

Thank you all for the awesome tips! I have a jacket with zippered pockets that I can use for my phone, but I hate running with it, because it bangs around & drives me crazy. I will bring my own fuel, though.

  • 1) do you carry your phone? If so, what do you wear/how do you secure it? If not, how do you hook up with your group/ride after the run?I do because I use it for my music.  I put it in my fuelbelt. 2) Do you bring your own fuel, even if the race provides it?Yes, I bring my own water and shot blocks. 3) How early do you typically get to a race?Depends on the race.  If I have to pick up my packet and I know it is a larger race maybe 30-45 minutes?  Smaller races I will get there 20 minutes before hand. 4) As a general rule, are there typically porta potties fairly frequently on the race route? I will definitely need a minimum of one stop along the way.Yes, usually!

    1) do you carry your phone? If so, what do you wear/how do you secure it? If not, how do you hook up with your group/ride after the run? no.  if I'm meeting people after we have a pre determined meeting space.  usuallly by a certain bag check number.

    2) Do you bring your own fuel, even if the race provides it? I'll bring my own gus/chomps/shot blocks.  I drink the water they provide on the course.  I don't usually drink gatorade while racing, but I'll drink what they have if I do need gatorade.

    3) How early do you typically get to a race? depends on how I am getting there, size of the race, if I've been to the race before, etc.  generally about an hour though, less if I'm walking/running to the race and don't have to warm up.

    4) As a general rule, are there typically porta potties fairly frequently on the race route? I will definitely need a minimum of one stop along the way. as a rule? no.  I don't think there were any porta potties on the course at the last 15K I ran. look at the race website.   it will tell you if there will be porta potties and where they will be.

  • 1) No, for shorter races my DH usually runs too, and we meet at the finish. For longer races, he knows around when I should finish and looks out for me, but we always have a backup location planned too.

    2) For longer races, yes. For a 15k I would probably bring water and Gu, because I like having water whenever I want it.

    3) Depends on the size, but anywhere from a half hour to 1.5 hours

    4) There have been during my longer races, yes.

  • 1) do you carry your phone? If so, what do you wear/how do you secure it? If not, how do you hook up with your group/ride after the run? - sometimes.  I wear a fuel belt for longer races and it has a little pouch in it, so I just stick it in there.  If I don't carry it, then we just discuss beforehand where we will meet

    2) Do you bring your own fuel, even if the race provides it? - I normally bring my own b/c then I know that I've used it before and it won't upset my stomach.

    3) How early do you typically get to a race? - small race, usually 30-45 minutes ahead of time, big race, at least an hour beforehand

    4) As a general rule, are there typically porta potties fairly frequently on the race route? I will definitely need a minimum of one stop along the way.- I think it depends on the race.  I've only ran one 15k course and there were no porto-pots, but it's a very small race.  If your's is big, I would think they would have at least one.

Anyone else doing the Shamrock Run in Portland this weekend? - nope
