Anyone have trouble with Orijen?

Booker has had pretty bad diarrhea for the last week. He doesn't have any parasites, but the vet found a lot of bacteria in his stool and put him on flagyl. It seemed to help for a little while, but now he's back to pooping water. This started the same time I bumped him up to 2/3 Orijen, 1/3 old food, so now I'm thinking that might be it? I'm going to put him back on the old stuff for a few days and see if that helps, but I was wondering if anyone else's dog had issues on Orijen. Thanks!

  • Did your protein source change when you switched?

Yes, he's been on on Great Life Buffalo, which is single-protein. Orijen has chicken and fish in it. I don't think it's the chicken, because I've had him on chicken formulas before and he didn't have an issue. I also thought maybe the potato? It's the first time he's been on potato.

  • Have you tried adding some pumpkin in or trying a different version of Orijen?

  • When we fed kibble Kali didn't do well on Orijen either.

  • Orijen always worked well for us, and we now feed their other brand Acana. But all dogs are.different and it just might not agree with him.

It could be that Orijen is too rich, or that the infection isn't completely gone.  I'd probably do boiled chicken and rice for a couple days, then go back to the old kibble.  If things don't get better, back to the vet.  If t hey do, I'd try transitioning to the ne food much more slowly.

  • Thanks for the advice, all.
  • OK, so, I had no chicken in the house, so tonight I just went back to the old food and added some pumpkin. I'll do the same thing in the A.M. If there's an immediate improvement, I'll stick with that, if not I'll do chicken and rice tomorrow night and give the vet a call.

    Thanks again!

  • Just wanted to add my girl didn't do well on Orijen - too rich for her.  We found she does best on TOTW.
