Colombia

We just decided on Colombia for later this year. Is there anything that are must dos in Colombia? If we did just Cartagena, Bogota, and maybe the amazon jungle area-would that be good?  Any off the beaten path recs?  Thanks!

Re: Colombia

  • How long do you have? What are your interests? I know plenty of people who've only gone to Bogot? or only to Cartagena and surroundings and enjoyed those trips, so it's not like you have to race around and try to see everywhere. I do know several people who really liked Medell?n, but I don't know that I'd make a separate trip depending on time constraints.

I don't know anyone who's been to the Amazon in Colombia, although I would caution that you do your research there since some of the jungle areas are less safe.

  • We spent a week in Cartagena for our honeymoon and loved it.  The city itself has great history, architecture and plenty to do/see.  Outside of the city we went to Rosario Islands for snorkeling and a mud bath in the Volcano Totumo.

Unfortunately I can't speak to other parts of Colombia but I would be happy to answer any questions about Cartagena.

  • we are looking at a timeframe between 10-15 days...and we have a wide range of interests!  We want the cultural experience, the beach, history, adventure etc.  Just look at medellin-I think we may put this on our list!  thanks!

@maggie2146-where did you stay in Cartagena? Were there any restaurants that you absolutley loved?

  • Originally we were staying in a bed and breakfast within the Walled City that had been recommended to us but unfortunately didn't work out (i.e. dirty and no privacy).  We ended up staying at Hotel Cartagena Plaza which was ok but would not have been our first choice.

Hotel Dann would probably be a good option.  It was very nice inside and we would have relocated there if they had a vacancy.

We loved La Olla Cartagenera.  Good food and a nice atmosphere.  I would recommend if you are in the Bocagrande area for dinner you might want to avoid the outside seating close to the street.  The local peddlers can be a bit persistent at times.

    Hope that helps!
