The people that raised my Yorkie for the first 3 years pretty much did no crate training or potty training. He pees inside 80% of the time. He poops inside 100% of the time. I will take him outside and he won't do anything. I let him and and sometimes he will run straight to go pee/poop where I can't see him. I'm so tired of stepping in his messes and constantly smelling pee.
We replaced the floors thinking that would help. Nope.
I blocked him off from his favorite spots to go. Now he has new favorite places.
I tried tethering him to me, but our other dog made it impossible for me to walk or anything because she wanted to play (I think she was just jealous).
I take him outside all the time. He just stands there and stares at me.
I would put him in the crate after I take him out and he doesn't go, but he sucks at being in the crate. He barks, shakes, and whines nonstop and this often causes him to puke. He will also try to scratch/chew his way out and I'm afraid he will break a nail or tooth. He also has no problem peeing inside the crate.
If I use a towel to quickly clean up pee and then set it in front of the washing machine until a load finishes, he will lay on the yucky towel. I think he likes the smell of his own pee.
I use Nature's Miracle and he still pees in the same place. I found that if I do that and then mop the entire floor (has to be the entire floor) with diluted bleach, it will work for about a day. I can't keep damaging my floor with bleach.
I'm really at a loss. I feel like nothing is going to work because he is so old. What can I do?
Re: Help potty and crate training 5 year old dog
If you cannot tether him to you I would gate him off in a room like the kitchen or any other room with tile when you can't watch him. When you see him pee or pop interrupt him right away and take him right outside so he has to finish out there. As soon as he finishes outside praise him like crazy and give him a treat.
I would also start taking him out on a schedule. If he seems to go around the same time every day start taking him out around that time. Have him on a leash and don't let him play or come in until he has gone. Of course as soon as he goes praise him like crazy and give him treats.
Another idea is to get those brick rock things that are supposed to attract a dog to pee in that spot.
As for the create make it a happy places for him. A place were he only gets a super special treat or toy. Also leave the door open durning the day so he can go in and out freely and see its not a scary place.
Good Luck!!
