Why did I plan a party for a week after moving?

This house is smaller, but since we are closer to family we have more people coming.  I used to have two frigs plus a wine frig.  Now I have one stupid side by side that feels smaller than either of my other two.  There are no pictures on the walls and there are serving pieces I can't find.  I know people will want a tour, but the bedrooms are mayhem and the office has just become a dumping ground.

I had my other house figured out for parties, but this one not so much.  Please may it be the predicted 73 and sunny on Sunday.

Re: Why did I plan a party for a week after moving?

  • Good Luck!  I'm sure everything will be fine.  :)
  • PS. Re: the fridge situation...  I have the same situation in our house.  I usually get a cooler and buy ice and chill salads and things that way overnight.  Also - I usually have to clean out my fridge of anything we don't need at all and put off "stocking up" on gallons of milk etc. until the day after the party.

PPS. Do not let DH take over that fridge with a ton of beer... :)

  • I would focus on a little bit of organizing every day until the party, but do not stress yourself out. I would also suggest not shoving everything into a closet, but eventually you'll have to take it all out and organize it anyway.

And like PP suggested, don't stock up on food until after the party (well, except for party food, of course)

  • I did the same thing before. I hosted a bridal shower for my SIL.

The house was not the way I wanted it at all, we just opened our pool and the water was lime green (we had to shock it more than a few times), rooms were a mess.  I don't know what I was thinking, but it ended up being a good time.

People understand you just moved and they're pretty forgiving. You always give good advice on the board, so I'm sure people will have fun no matter the state of your house.   Good luck!

  • Because you're an EI girl and you couldn't resist :)

Side-by-sides are stupid small; it's not your imagination.  Do you have a garage and room for a second fridge?  Now you have an excuse :)

DH and I move often, very often, for work, generally about every 18 months.  When you live somewhere for such a short time, you have to get set up instantly if you're ever going to feel at home anywhere.  So if you're up for it, send your kids to relatives and try it the way we do it: take every last single thing out of every last single box and recycle the boxes and paper on Day 1.  All your stuff will be out everywhere - on the counters, on the floor - but it's so easy to put away then on Day 2.  It's the act of unpacking that's the awful part.  Once everything's out in the open, you can see it to put it away.  For us, the house is generally completely set up in 48 hours and ready for company with paint, curtains & art in 7 days.  Yep, I'm a moving beast ;)

  • We have room in the garage or the basement for a frig.  We are waiting to see if the old house sells what the people want from it.  If they don't want any appliances we'll end up with 3 frigs so we'll wait.  Well, 4 since the previous owners of this house failed to get rid of the one that we specifically asked they get rid of.  At least AEP will give you $50 and pick up the old one.  I just need to clear the garage to get to it.

I managed to find my serving pieces and there are only a few boxes left of tool type stuff.  The living areas are good except the art stuff.  I don't know where to put what so I need my mom to help.  We were in the old house 6 years and DH is a hoarder.  There is a ton of stuff and we lost 1000 sq ft.  The other stupid problem is that the office dumping ground doesn't have an overhead light.  All of our lamps are still in the old house in case there is a nighttime showing.  We never get in there during the day so.......

Centerpieces done, banner done, fireplace decor done, plates and silver washed and wrapped, non perishables purchased.  I'm feeling better.
