Does whole wheat orzo exist?

Re: Does whole wheat orzo exist?

  • It does.

And in my experience? It's terrible. At least the brand I had, which is the only one I've been able to find. It was just really gummy and not good. I eat all whole wheat pasta EXCEPT orzo.

  • Amazon has it but all the free ship ones are giant amounts.

I found some online here at amazon... but I agree with MWC, I've had it once and was not impressed.

  • Good to know. Thanks, ladies!
  • I found the brand linked by the pp at Whole Foods. I used it in soup and though it was fine. I can't speak to how it is on its own.
  • I've found it at WF

  • I got the Delallo one at WF before and think I liked it... I don't remember hating it!
  • I found it in the Jewish food section at Kroger (I don't understand the connection, either!).  Haven't tried it yet, so I can't say if it's any good or not.
  • Yes it does.  I've never been able to find it in stores though.  So I always order it online.

I saw a lot of people post that they don't like it, but I think it depends on how you prepare it.  I make mine in a risotto style and my family loves it.  Instead of boiling water and cooking it like regular pasta, I sautee up an onion in a little olive oil and throw in the orzo raw.  Let it cook raw for about 2-3 minutes and then I add chicken broth and white wine (depending on how much you make but it's usually around 1 part orzo and 2-3 parts liquid).  Stir it around so it doesn't stick and make sure the liquid gets absorbed - adding more stock if you need.  Once the liquid is absorbed and the orzo is tender - I throw in a can of peas and a can of mushrooms or you could add peas and carrots - whatever you'd like!

It's definitely a favorite side dish in my family - even my 10 year old niece loves it!  Hope this is helpful!
