Hi! - Im new, but also a question for you :o)

Hey! I'm starting up my little seeds for this years garden and I've gardened before and did pretty good for a beginner. My question though is what to do with a hill. Half of our property is a hill and I've finally cleared it off for the most part, after letting weeds and crap grow on it for two years.

It's around 2k sq ft total.

What would you do? We've discussed mulching, but that'll range around 3-400 pending on where we get the mulch from.

We've also discussed planting grass, but after research, discovered that it'd probably be a waste of money because the seeds would wash down.

I kind of want to insert little boxes and have small gardens randomly on the hill.

Any thoughts?

  • It sounds like you're thinking of doing a few terraces in the hillside.  We have a smaller hill in the back, and I like that it's on different levels.

I think you'll spend over $400 (unless you can get really cheap materials) but it would probably make better use of the space.  You could have flatter areas of usable lawn, boxes for plants, or put mulch or gravel in some of the space too.

Here are a couple of sites you might like:

  • I vote for either the raised boxes or a hillside garden.  It probably wouldn't be cheap, but you could make a lovely perenial garden on that hill.  I know Martha Stewart has featured hillside gardens.
  • A friend of mine has turned her hill into a beautiful flower garden. She's kept the cost down by buying seeds and bulbs on Ebay or asking friends for cuts from their plants. She's got a long hill, so each summer/fall, she works on a portion and she's over halfway done now.
