Oprah's Next Chapter- Whitney Houston

Did anyone watch this? If so, what did you think?

I DVR'ed it and just watched it today.

I gave the side-eye when they announced this episode would air. Whitney had not even died one entire month before they gave an interview. You can tell that it has not even hit Bobbi Christina that her mother is gone. She just kept repeating the same things over and over again. She also said people were saying all of these things about her mom and she wanted them to know that it wasn't true. Poor girl. I don't think Oprah should interviewed her at all so soon after the death.

The interview with her sister-in-law was very interesting. She said that she could tell Whitney was on a downward spiral since the late 90s and had a bad feeling the weekend she died.  She said that she did not think Bobby Brown introduced drugs to Whitney. Oprah asked her if she was afraid Whitney would fall and she said yes, but not from drugs. She was afraid it would be from chasing a dream with a younger man who always wanted to be out and about (I'm assuming RJ?) and her SIL was afraid that would ultimately hurt her. Very interesting.

Re: Oprah's Next Chapter- Whitney Houston

  • I was very put off by the decision to interview the family, especially Bobbi Kristina, this soon. But.... I watched anyway. Embarrassed

I didn't really "buy" Bobbi Kristina's interview that much. But that's understandable- it's too soon! Most of her "answers" were fed to her by Oprah. She would say, "I feel this or I think this... don't you?"  I was expecting to see a good interview with her 3-5 years down the road, after she's had a lot of time to a. heal, b. grow up and c. get off drugs herself. Tongue Tied

The SIL was interesting- the dig at Ray J wasn't necessary. We'll never know how happy or sad he may have ended up making her....

I was glad though about her comment about Bobby. It is so well known that Whitney did drugs before him. And honestly, once they were broken up overall he appeared to do better than she did.

As for Oprah, she still has that thing where she cuts people off and that bugged me. Nevertheless, I watched something on OWN for the first time in months and I think that was the point. Surprise

I think it is disgraceful that Oprah chose to tape/air the interview so soon after Whitney's death.  Of course the ratings are better, but that doesn't make it tasteful.

I know Whitney was incredibly "handled."  I remember a story about how she cursed (f-word) and it was caught by a microphone.  Clive Davis told her not to allow that to happen again.  Whitney argued that someone else (Madonna? but maybe it was another black female artist, not sure) cursed all the time.  He told her "she's not Whitney Houston."  So Whitney was definately supposed to have a "girl singing from the church choir" image, even if that really wasn't what she was.  It must be hard having to be two different people.
