I'm having a rough week

Well I guess a rough past week and a half. My runs have been terrible and I haven't  be able to make it 2 miles once in the past week and a half. It takes me about 23 minutes to run and I am barely making it to 20 minutes. I had to stop last night at 15 minutes :(

My calves have been hurting really bad while I run. I'm going to get new shoes tonight so hopefully that will help. I have been getting really thirsty (after drinking 50+ oz of water during the day) and tired.

Its frustrating. Any tips on how to improve my runs?

Re: I'm having a rough week

  • It's possible you're still under-hydrated - 50+ oz is a start, but depending on who you ask you should be drinking anywhere from 64-130oz (depending on size and activity level). Or it could be that you're low on electrolytes as well. Maybe eat a banana before (30-60min) your run for the potassium? A friend of mine regularly adds table salt to her water to help keep up her electrolytes - just a little can make a difference. The shoes might help as well, though be careful on your first few runs while they're breaking in.

    I hope you feel better!

  • Whenever I have PMS, my runs are really crappy...Hope it gets easier for you.
  • Where do you live?  If its getting really warm outside it may just take you some time to adjust to the heat.

My home office. Joeyzlovieg's hubby made it for me. I love it!
  • Try slowing down? Are you wearing yourself out to quickly?

Someone else mentioned having calf pain yesterday -  I usually do a slow warm up, 1/2 mile to a 1 mile, depending on how i'm feeling after a 1/2 mi. Then increase my pace. If I try to go out to fast it's guaranteed that I will end up with calf pain.

Increase water. New shoes. Maybe you're just having a rough patch right now. It happens. I also sometimes stretch after my 1 mi warm up. I know some people don't like to stop & stretch during a run, but i'm not one of them. If I feel like I need to stretch, i'm going to stop & stretch. Stretch your calves, roll them if you have a foam roller or stick. (or a rolling pin if you don't have either - i'll admit i've used a rolling pin more than once when my foam roller wasn't getting the job done).

  • Oh, man, I hate rough patches like that :(  I would say hopefully the new shoes help but also try slowing down a little.  And definitely stretch and foam roll, that always helps me :)  Good luck!!
