Anyone seen turquoise kitchen cabinets IRL?

I really like the look of this kitchen below with the turquoise lower cabinets and white uppers (from here at www.lifeingraceblog.com):

We are moving into a new house this week and I'm contemplating doing this to the kitchen since we plan to rennovate the entire kitchen in about 5 years anyway.  Right now the cabinet bases are white with maple wood front doors.  It seems odd to have white cupboards with wood doors anyway, so painting would make it more fun and livable for about 5 years+.  Then we can get the cabinets we want and go with a more neutral color if we're sick of turquoise.

Here's the before with seller's stuff - pretty bad - we'll be buying new appliances soon and actually taking out one wall and changing some uppers to open shelves, but we'll still have a lot of mismatched cabinets.

Has anyone seen turquoise cabinets IRL - I've seen a lot on blogs, but nobody I know has them in their actual kitchens.

I need to decide if I should tackle this before moving in and postpone moving everything for a week or so or if it's not worth the effort and to just move the kitchen in.  It would be much easier to do cabinet painting now if we still have a back-up house/kitchen to eat in rather than later with 2 adults, 2 young kids, and a dog around.

My other idea is to just add a kitchen island that we paint turquoise and then paint all the cabinets white.

  • I've never seen it IRL, but I think you should totally do it!  If you're planning on ripping them out in 5 years, why not?  What have you got to lose?

  • I have white uppers and green lowers and I love love love it. Our kitchen desperately needs a total overhaul (it's mostly original to our 80 yr old house) but its just not worth the money for us now, so in the meantime I paint it fun colors and focus on less pricey renos. The green and white is really fun and cute, I'm a huge fan!

  • My grandmother repaints her kitchen every other year.  She gets bored with the same color.  It has been a shade of blue at least three times in the last 30+ years. Pale blue can add spark to a kitchen but some shades of blue can come across as cold.   At least, that was the reason for the last paint job.  It went to a buttery yellow then.  Currently, the cabinetry is pale grey while the walls are lavender.

Full disclosure: I haven't seen them IRL, but I love the look online.

I actually don't really like the look in the picture you've posted, but I like this:

Do you know the color name and paint brand for that top picture?  I like that subtle look even more.

I'm not sure I would try to DIY with those cabinets though.  The look seems to work best with really substantial almost mission style cabinets. I'm not sure it will look as sharp with the cabinets you've got in that kitchen.

I love everything about that kitchen. It's making me reconsider dismissing wood countertops again.

It's from this blog. You might try emailing the blogger and asking.

I was just going to recommend checking that blog because there are a lot of turquoise kitchens featured.

Personally, I LOVE the idea.  I would do it in my kitchen in a minute if we weren't going to sell this place soon.

    DO IT!

    This.

It's funny that you posted this today...I saw turquoise cabinets on tv this morning (a beach house on Matlock), and they have been on my mind since.

  • What the hell were they thinking with the white frames and oak doors?! My eyes are bleeding.

I would do white doors and a turquoise island. Sounds fun! Post pics!!!

  • There's a nestie here who has them. I saved this pic of hers pre-Pinterest and can't remember her name.

Haha that's me!  I lurk more than I post and was just about to respond to this thread and then saw my own kitchen already posted. Stick out tongue  We went with a more bold look, obviously, with the lighter turquoise on the walls as well but our house is very open and the kitchen is literally in the center of the house.  Our other rooms are more muted and neutral with pops of color.  It just depends on what you feel comfortable with, but I say go for it! I love the lighter ones PP posted too.

We had a painter do it for us with a sprayer; I only wish we'd had a clear sealant put on as well since there are some nicked spots and I think it would have protected more from food and drink splashes.
