DC museum help
in Travel
DH and I have been to DC a few times, but we are going again in May for DH's birthday (for the art of video games exhibit at the American Art Museum). I want to try to find an indoor activity (thinking a museum) for a Sunday afternoon. We have been to the American History, Natural History, Archives, Air and Space all recently. We want something that is free (trying to keep our sightseeing low budget) and we already will be going to the American Art Museum. No other art museums (we like art, but one art museum for the trip is enough for us)....anyone have any recommendations to museums/things they've enjoyed? We're pretty open to anything!

Holocaust museum is very moving. Native American museum has a modern, relaxed feel. The national cathedral, isn't really an all day activity, but it's pretty and has beautiful grounds/gardens if you want a little outside
!

You have really listed all the free museums there, especially if you don't want to do another art museum. (i am guessing you have done the Capitol and monuments too).
The National Zoo is also free.
Holocaust Museum - amazing but very somber
It's not free, but I LOVED the Newseum. It was my favorite and I think it's well worth the cost.
Library of Congress? We ended up there randomly and really enjoyed it.
ETA: nm, it's closed on Sundays.
Another vote. I haven't been, but really want to go...I just haven't been able to get into DC without my kids and they're too young.
Don't forget that from March - August, you need to get timed entry passes (they are free if you try for same-day passes) for the main exhibit. You can do it in advance online, though, for a small service fee if you want to make sure you get them for your preferred date.
We're big on the National Gallery of Art as a change of pace from the "usual" Smithsonian stops at Air and Space, Natural History and American History. The Native American museum is good (better for adults; it bores my kids) but IMO has the best cafeteria on the mall if you're looking for recommendations about where to grab a quick bite. The National Zoo is another huge favorite, but not right near other things you may be doing in the Mall area.
Also on our list to try because I hear good things, but know very little about them, are the Postal Museum and the Building Museum.
I am a fan of hitting up exhibits I like and not committing a whole museum.
I go very frequently to Natural History because I love the ocean hall. They've rearranged the stuffed mammals all in one place so it's pretty cool.
I would look at the Smithsonian site and see what particular exhibits interest you and see where that takes you.
The Newseum is interesting, but it is really text heavy. Lots of reading.
Also, check out culturaltourism.com. You can find odd little exhibits from around town.
