Dog Issue - Gross

I need help trying to identify the source of a foul and mysterious odor being expelled from my 9 month old male lab. When he was around 6 months I noticed a nasty smell on his kennel blanket when I was straightening it out one night. I chalked it up to a goofy onetime thing, washed the blanket and moved on. Then about a month later he was laying on his dog bed in the living room and I smelled this same nasty smell. It is like a rotten fish, poop, funk. No visible sign of anything but had to wash the bed to remove the smell. We thought it could be marking but I had no point of reference. Last night he was laying in the chair with my husband after a bath (he was dry before getting on the chair) and when I sat there later.....the smell was on the chair.

Any guesses what this could be? Someone at work mentioned anal glands and someone else said it sounded like marking. It is seriously the nastiest thing I have ever smelled. If it is something going on with the anal gland I want to get it checked out.

Re: Dog Issue - Gross

  • I'd call your vet. It sounds like he might need to have his anal glands expressed but your vet will know for sure. My husband's dog stinks but sadly, there is no such remedy. Aaaaaand, boom, she just ripped one :(

  • Ditto everyone.

Coopers never had his expressed, but eeeevery once in awhile I'll catch that smell in the house & know he just did it (as opposed to the "norm" which is when they poop). Its totally digusting, once he just happened to be laying next to me on the couch w/his butt to me, & as he went to stand up he literally expressed on my side. It was SO gross. Had that never happened to me before, if I had read that from someone else I wouldn't have believed it, now I sure do! ::shudders::

  • Another vote for anal glands.
  • Definitely anal glands!  Go get your dog squeezed! My dog gets blocked a couple times a year, and needs to go in, but our vet said some dogs are so bad they come monthly..

    Fourth Anniversary

We just had this issue last night and proceeded to give him a bath, wiped down the couch as it happened when he was playing with us up on the couch.

So can anyone teach me about anal glands? How often do I expect this to happen? What is "bad" enough to warrant taking him to the vet? Do we take him there every time this happens? Any thing I can do to help him avoid this, prevent this or make it less happen often?

Sorry if I ended up hijacking this thread with new questions but I think this was exactly our problem last night. I think whatever it is got into something (couch or on the dog) because every time he came near us, he could smell it. We also ended up washing a blanket that was on the couch because we thought it got the smell too :((
