Mirena Birth Control

Anyone on Mirena? I've been tried three different pills for the last 3 years and I'm just sick of everyone I've tried. I'm interested in the side effects of sex drive and weight gain? pros and cons? Thoughts in general?

Re: Mirena Birth Control

  • I've had it for about a year. Overall I really haven't had any side effects at all. The insertion was uncomfortable but not bad at all. I really like it and would recommend it.

  • Everyone's body will react differently to different hormonal birth control methods. If you want to try Mirena, talk to your doctor.

  • I had awful reactions to regular birth controls. I'd have extreme mood swings and even I felt like I was crazy. but after the birth of my son my FI and I decided to give the Mirena a try. Its been about a year and other than the intial discomfort during insertion and the constsant bleeding the first couple months, (nothing major just the need to wear a panty liner just in case) its been so much better than regular birth control. But I agree that everyone will react differently and definately talk to your doctor and see if its right for you.
  • I got mine about a year ago and was happy with it for the most part until recently.  I was having stabbing pains and they had to remove it last week.  I have been a mess since it came out and feel like I just gave birth again.  All people react differently to bc so you should really talk to your dr.  You also might want to look into Implanon.  I had that before getting pregnant and didn't have any complaints except for the occasional spotting.

  • I had mine inserted about three months ago and love it. Insertion hurt for 2 seconds and that was about it.

Pros: the 'monthly freakout' is over, the girls grew, AF is MUCH lighter, and cramps are lighter too.

Cons: trans-vag ultrasound was a little uncomfortable, spotting while your body gets used to the hormone, chest is a little more tender than usual, and random, though mild, cramps for a few minutes from time to time.

    Hope that helps!

  • I decided to get the IUD after our first was born.  I had it in for almost 4 years, before we decided to Try for baby #2.  I got it out June 2011, had a chemical pregnancy in Aug, a Natural Miscarriage in October, and Im in the process of having another Miscarriage, which after weeks of spotting im having a D&C on friday.

I loved my iud when I had it, no symptoms, easy periods, and not having to worry. but when it came to having it removed, it took two appts and 3 different doctors to find it and remove it. it was horrible.  my best friend who also got it in when i did randomly started her period in aug, and it turned out that it shifted and wasnt working properly. she had it removed, and is 9 weeks pregnant now, our due dates were a week apart! :(

A girl in my mommy group had to have surgery because hers was embedded.

My advice is DO NOT get the IUD.  It will cause you problems, and I honestly believe all my problems are due to that.  Especially if you haven't had any children yet, trust me, not not worth the heartache of dealing with one loss, let alone multiple!

It seems like all these ladies haven't had it removed yet.  If you would of asked me earlier last year, I would of said what they said.

Just google IUD or Mirena problems and you will be surprised at their term of "rare cases"  I call BS.  All 3 of my friends who have had it, had horrible problems after the fact and during removal. as well as my friend who worked in an OBGYN Office, she would tell me all the crazy stories!

    DONT GET IT!

  • I had the Mirena for about 3 years before recently having mine removed.  I have never had kids and the insertion was slightly uncomfortable.  I had no periods for the entire 3 years, no weight gain, and sex drive was fine.  I did, however, have totally random spotting and cramping (usually always after sex).  Sometimes the spotting would last a day or two or sometimes a week and would be just enough to be bothersome.  I finally decided that enough was enough, had it removed, and started back on BC pills (which I'm actually stopping in a week).  The removal was very simple for me.  It took about 30 seconds probably.  Good luck with whatever you decide.
