Logic

I am a very logical person. That is why I do not want to have a baby.

I was a math major in college. I was primarily going to school to be a high school math teacher, but our professors always held out the option for us that if we took a test we could become an actuary. Actuaries are the people who work for insurance companies and calculate risks involved with certain insurance plans, etc. At first this seemed like it might be appealing to me. Then I realized-- INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE THE DEVIL.

With all of the very intelligent mathematically minded people working for them, you'd think they'd make more logical decisions.

For example, my insurance company is refusing to cover any birth control for me. Which is absolutely ridiculous. Do they really think that it would cost them more money for a simple IUD procedure than it would if I got pregnant and required several doctor's visits, tests, ultrasounds, and ultimately delivery of the baby? I never took the actuary test, but I'm pretty sure the average 5th grader could do some basic addition and figure this one out.

The reason I want the IUD is because I cannot take the pill, the patch, or the ring. I can't take all of those things because they all contain estrogen, and a few months ago I got a blood clot from the estrogen in the combination pill I had been taking the past few years. Yes, people actually do get blood clots from taking birth control. It was a shock to me, too.

And it turns out the same people who get blood clots from birth control are the people who are more likely to get blood clots from being pregnant. Oh, and did I mention that if you get pregnant while taking blood thinners it could result in damaging birth defects? Have I stated enough reasons for not wanting to get pregnant right now!?

So I have been on blood thinners and condoms for the past 5 months. I'm getting a little sick of the blood thinners. I'm getting VERY sick of the condoms. But I really, REALLY don't want to get pregnant. You see the conundrum. So I want to get the Mirena IUD, which is progestin-only and very effective. But the brand new "really good way better" health insurance that my husband is getting through work will not cover a single penny of any birth control.

So here are my options: Pay $1500 for the device and the procedure at my gynecologist's office. OR. Or what? Planned Parenthood offers the IUD procedure really cheap, but I don't feel comfortable going there because they are so openly, vocally pro-choice. I'm not a political activist or anything, but I hold strongly to the belief that abortion is wrong, and I just don't feel comfortable going there. I'm going to call around to different obgyns in my area, but regardless I'm gonna have to cough up some money.

But anything is cheaper than a baby, right?

Logic wins in the end.

Re: Logic

  • If logic won you'd go get the same thing done cheaper.

    YesYesYes

It sucks that your insurance doesn't cover it and I'm sorry you have blood clot problems. If you feel that an IUD is your only option, you're either going to have to suck it up and cough up the money or go to PP. If you object so much to PP on moral grounds, I don't think that you should be complaining about how much more an IUD costs OOP. If you can't afford that, then stick with condoms.

I don't understand your logic. But good job insulting everyone who does want a baby.

Thanks Seshat, I was thinking the same thing.

By your logic, the only people in this world would be the people that were born to parents that didn't want/plan them (i.e. every child on 16 and Pregnant, or Snooki's baby, and some married folks here or there).

  • If logic wins, you'll take the cheaper IUD.

    P.S. Don't move to Arizona.

    I love you.

... and at first I forgot how their cars are different and I thought "he's doing that while driving?!?" I mean, I know people that do stupid stuff while driving, but posting it online isn't always smart.

  • I'm going to go against everyone here and say, if you are morally opposed to something, ie PP, than you are a hypocrite if you use them, just because they benefit you. It may suck to pay more, but no one said sticking to your beliefs would be easy.

Also, it really sucks they won't pay for it. What if the doctors proved medical necessity? Would they cover it then?

  • Am I an idiot or isn't BC (including IUD) supposed to be covered 100% in August. That's what I'm waiting for... I'll be heartbroken (and feel stupid) if this isn't true.

If it IS true, 5 months isn't that long of a wait, dude.

  • It's too effing early for this ***.

Pay $1500 or stay celibate. Those are your options if you're so pro-life.

Also, they are talking about this on the news at this moment. Weird.
