Just reassure me...re:spay

So my 5 month old baby girl is getting spayed today! The only dog I remember getting fixed was my 4y/o male and I wasn't worried about him at all.. His boys were just lasered off, so not that invasive.  I KNOW I have to spay her.. I just need reassurance that she will be okay (and maybe some tips to keep a crazy boxer calm and comfortable until she's healed).. I think it may be my preggo hormones that is making me so sad about this.

Re: Just reassure me...re:spay

  • I'm sure she'll be fine :)  I was the same way when my girl got spayed almost three years ago...I think I checked my phone at least 50 times waiting for the call that she was out of surgery and doing great!

The vet may mention this, but don't feed her a ton for the first 24 hours or so after she comes home-the remnants of the anesthesia can cause an upset tummy.  Along those same lines, if she throws up a little bit of yellow stuff don't freak out...its probably a combo of anesthesia effects and empty stomach.

To keep her calm(ish)-are you crate training her?  If you are, some quality time in her crate is a good idea.  To keep her occupied, pick up a couple of Kong toys, fill the middle with pure canned pumpkin (as opposed to pie filling, which isn't good for doggy tummies), peanut butter, etc and pop it in the freezer for a while.  It'll take her a little while to lick out the good stuff and will give her some mental stimulation in the process.  Good luck, and try not to worry! :)

  • She'll do fine! :o)  I can totally relate because it was 11 years ago that I dropped my Lily cat off for her spay and I still remember getting teary-eyed as they took her away. Yeah, I'm a baby. Of course she was totally fine, but I'm still a baby.

  • Thanks guys. They called and said she was fine :). Now just to keep her calm until she's healed! Wish me luck :)
  • I just took Charlie two weeks ago to be neutered, I cried when they took him away too Crying  Not to mention he never looked back because he thought he was going somewhere fun.  He ended up bouncing back within a day (it was really hard to keep him calmed down and resting).
