Rhubarb & Asparagus - from seed?

I bought a seed collection from Baker Creek, and have rhubarb and asparagus seeds. However, I always heard that it's not worth growing these from seed, that it's better to start with the plants. Any advice? I DO want asparagus and rhubarb in my yard, but not sure I want to deal with babying mini plants for a few years before getting anything out of it.

Re: Rhubarb & Asparagus - from seed?

  • If you start from seed, you'll have to wait longer before harvest.

Asparagus from crowns shouldn't be harvest for 3 years.  It's 4 from seeds.

I'd imagine rhubarb is similar, but not as long a wait.  I know I planted crowns knowing I wouldn't be having pie from that plant until a year from then.

  • Ditto - I started asparagus from seeds, it took 4 years to harvest.

I have only ever started these from roots/plants. Never from seed. Even from roots they take years to establish themselves.
