ugh. Tile remorse. PsIP

I have tile remorse. Sad

We're currently finishing our basement and I am having major tile remorse for the tile I chose for the wet bar flooring. :::sigh::::

Now that it's on the floor, I think it's going to be too busy with the counter I chose for the bar. And it's looking "pinkish" rather than "greige-ish".

these are iPhone pics so the quality isn't great. Here's a pic of all the samples together (tile on bottom, counter, white cabs, and the paint chip for the walls). I took this picture near a window so it's under natural light.

image

I should have gotten multiple tiles and laid them out on the floor in the basement (which doesn't get a lot of natural light) before I finalized the tile. ::: sigh::::

Anywayyyy...here's what it looks like now that it has been laid. I couldn't turn on the lights above the bar area b/c the light switch was beyond my reach so the photo is dark. The wet bar is in the far back corner of the basement so it is going to get very little natural light, although there will be two recessed lights and two pendants in that space.

image

I think there's too much movement in the tile so it's going to look so bossy with the counter which is pretty busy in itself. Anyway, I can't have them rip it up and order new tile b/c I don't want to go over budget and over schedule. This is not our forever house so we didn't want to spend a lot of money on materials, but I know this is going to bug me so much.

ok, so is there anything I can do to salvage this? Am I jumping the gun here? Maybe it'll look ok when it's finished? or am I going to be looking at pink tiles, black/grey counters and white cabinets for the next 3-5 years?? Crying

And I still have to pick the carpet for the rest of the room. It'll come right up to where the tile ends. How do I make sure the beige I pick out doesn't turn "pink" when it's installed?? I've been reading about beige undertones, but I swear I must be colorblind. I thought that tile had yellow undertones! :::smacking forehead::::

  • I can definitely see some pink undertones, but honestly, I don't think it will look bad once everything is installed.  You can also try playing around with the lightbulbs in your fixtures once those are installed to help minimize the pink-ness of the tile.

  • Wait until the grout is down before you make a judgement.  I think you'll find the the flooring has much less going on when the grout is in.

Also, once you have accessories, art, paint on the walls, etc I think you'll find that every thing blends.

  • I don't think it looks bad! If you have some extra tiles or pieces leftover after cutting, make up some sample boards with your tile and different grout. Even if you already bought your grout, it's worth it to spend ~$10/bag on a couple different colors of grouts to see if they bring out different undertones in the tile. Wait at least 24 hours before judging the grout color because it changes color significantly when it dries.

thanks for your response. hopefully once everything is in, it won't be as bad as what I'm imagining in my head. and good idea about playing with lighting. I'll try it!

by the way, I just saw your siggy. Congrats on making the decision to adopt! Wishing you a speedy adoption journey!! I'm hoping we return to our adoption plan in the near future as well. good luck!

  • I agree with MaineWifey...I would wait before judging.

It looks much more pink next to the yellow in the first photo than it does in the room/on the floor in the second photo.  Definitely look at carpet samples in the actual space.

thanks for talking me off the ledge. The contractors are grouting at this very moment. I'll have to go down and take a look once they're finished. ::::deep breath:::

  • I think the color gradiation within the tile is what is making it NMS.  However, I think it will likely look better when everything is done.  Like PPs said, grout, accessories, furniture, etc will change the way it looks.  Plus - honestly - you'll get used to it.  I sometimes freak out when something first changes because it "just doesn't look right" but its because my brain is still getting used to the new look.

I think in an absolute worst-case scenario - you get done with everything and still don't like it, you can always put down some throw rugs (with grippies, of course) and cover it up.

Thank you, we're pretty excited!  I wish we could get started sooner, but between grad school and finances, we'll have to keep waiting about another year.

I hope everything goes smoothly for you when you get back on the adoption wagon. :)

  • I don't think the tile is bad at all! Its pretty neutral. This may be just me, but I don't think the tile goes with your countertop. Have you already ordered it? I'm in the same situations as you- about to pick out my bar tile! I know it's probably not the way it's supposed to be done, but instead of choosing everything at once (and not knowing how everything will look) I'm choosing evything as I go. First I picked bar cabinets, and installed them. Then, I'm about to pick out tile, install it, and THEN the counters. It's nice because I can bring home samples and see what it looks like as I go, instead of ordering everything together and hoping for the best.

haha!! I was actually looking at your bio last night (saw your response in a post below where you posted a pic of your kitchen) and my tile remorse grew ten-fold after I saw your kitchen floors!! Those are exactly what I would have wanted!! (your kitchen is gorgeous, by the way and I'm totally impressed it was pretty much all DIY!!) And then when I saw you bought them at Lowes, my remorse grew bigger and then when I went to the Lowes website and saw they stock them in my local store, I almost cried. I tossed and turned all night and when my husband woke up this morning I told him I had tile remorse and he just shook his head and said,"oh well, too late now!"

We're on a tight timeline and budget so my contractor insisted I find a tile that's in-stock at Lowes or HD. I went to HD but it looks like I should have gone to Lowes!! ::::more head banging on desk::::

anywaaaayyyy, thanks for your advice. Unfortunately, the grout is being put on at this very moment. I told my contractor to pick a grout that matches the tile and he suggested I use the gray grout I'm already using in the bathroom (different tile) b/c it matched this tile as well. (see?? he though it was gray too! he must be color-blind as well) Hopefully it looks ok. :::fingers crossed:::

yeah, the iphone pics are a little wonky in terms of color. Last night I was in bed staring at a photo of the installed tile that I took on my phone (which looked really pink) and was getting more and more annoyed at the tile I picked.

First thing this morning, I went back down to the basement and IRL it didn't look as pink as it did on the phone which was a relief, but I'm still having major tile remorse.

and I'm definitely dragging those carpet samples down to the basement tonight to look at it under that light!! thanks!! :-)

me too!! that's what makes it too "busy" for me and I worry it'll be too much with the counters. It looks like the tile in our master bath... which I don't really care for! :-(  I just didn't notice the color gradiation in a single tile (well, I did notice it, but I just thought it made it look more "stone" like). But once I saw it laid out on the floor, I realized it looked just like the tile in the master bath. oy.

yep, we've already ordered the countertops and the cabinetry. :-(  I told our contractor that I wanted white or cream-colored cabinetry and a solid surface countertop. We've been adamant about staying within our budget and our timeline so he only gave me three granite samples to choose from (readily available and in our budget). One was an absolute "no way" (almost orange-y and way too much movement) and the other was sort of a greenish color that I didn't like and then there was the one I chose. It seemed pretty neutral at the time, but I wish it were more of a solid color.

My contractor basically dropped off the cabinet and granite samples and told me he needed to know which ones I wanted to use by the next morning. I had a few tile samples that I had brought home from HD because they looked neutral in the store, and the one I ended up picking seemed to "go" with the cabinets and counter the best.

Definitely not the way I would have picked cabinetry, counters and flooring for a kitchen reno, but I guess for a basement bar, it is what it is...

    thanks for your response!

  • The floor and the countertops will never be close to each other so I doubt you'll have to worry about their 'business' fighting with each other.  Can you wait until after the floor is finished and the counter is installed to paint?  Maybe you can pick something there that will tone down the pink. Same with the carpet, wait until the floor is grouted before finalizing that order (if possible)

unfortunately I can't. :-(  I have to tell my contractor tonight which carpet I want. Trim and doors are going in on Mon-Tues and then the painters are coming in to paint, quickly followed by the carpet install. The cabinets and counters are already on order, but they won't be in for a couple of weeks so they will go in last. :::sigh:::

We are doing this whole project in 6 weeks.

  • Looks just like the tile we put in out fuest bath. From Lowe's? I thought it was too gold but love it now after its been grouted, walls painted and lighting in. Lighting changes tile color a lot. Pics in my blog along w the tile name I think.

It does look similar to yours (your guest bath looks great, by the way!), but I got mine at Home Depot and yours seems to have more gold tones than mine.

I will definitely hold out my final judgment until everything is in. hopefully I will end up loving my tile like you love yours! thanks for sharing!
