Can someone please tell him that this is not a theocracy? I think bunny said this...Rick Santorum thinks about gay porn more often than gay pornographers think about gay porn.
Rick Santorum wants to put an end to the distribution of pornography in the United States.
"America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography," Santorum's official website reads. "Pornography is toxic to marriages and relationships. It contributes to misogyny and violence against women. It is a contributing factor to prostitution and sex trafficking."
The former Pennsylvania senator states that, "as a parent, I am concerned about the widespread distribution of illegal obscene pornography and its profound effects on our culture."
Santorum criticized the Obama administration for turning "a blind eye ... to the scourge of pornography" and for refusing to enforce obscenity laws.
"If elected President, I will appoint an Attorney General who will do so," Santorum writes. "While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum Administration."
Santorum is not the first presidential candidate to take up the obscenity issue. In July, Michele Bachmann signed a pledge vowing her support of a constitutional amendment that, among other things, called for a ban on all pornography. (It also effectively called for a ban on same-sex marriage.)
The Atlantic wonders if Santorum's wide-scale crackdown on porn could actually work.
The Daily Caller found someone who thinks it could. "If the government wanted to aggressively move against Internet pornography, it could do so," UCLA law professor Eugene Volokh told the site.
Wonkette's Rebecca Schoenkopf pointed out it's just another example of Santorum positioning himself as the extremely conservative choice for president.
"It seems that Rick Santorum has found time in his busy schedule of condemning 'radical' women for working outside the home and using birth control, and nagging English-speaking Puerto Ricans to speak English, and now is turning his hot, penetrating gaze to manfolk-bizness," she wrote.
Re: Santorum vows to ban porn
I can get behind banning porn so long as prostitution is illegal. It's inconsistent to me. Either both should be illegal or both should not (I'm of the opinion that both should not).
I often wonder if Rick Santorum would like the entire movie industry abolished. Watching two people have real sex is no different (Biblically) IMO than watching and enjoying a movie where someone is pretending to have sex, murders, steals, or commits any other sin. If watching someone engage in a sinful act is wrong, than it is wrong on all counts.
Free will, Rick. Free will.
Can you put this on twitter with #inmyheart?

From his website:
Current federal ?obscenity? laws prohibit distribution of hardcore (obscene) pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV, in retail shops and through the mail or by common carrier. Rick Santorum believes that federal obscenity laws should be vigorously enforced. ?If elected President, I will appoint an Attorney General who will do so.?
The Obama Administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws.
So, it appears he's not looking to change anything. He's talking about anti-pornography laws that are already out there. He is talking about enforcing those laws, not creating new ones.
so, get the government back in our bedrooms?
and FTR, porn has been awesome for my marriage. fact.
I'd love for him to do the same thing for guns. Illegal guns are a huge issue...I'd love to see him say this.
The former Pennsylvania senator states that, "as a parent, I am concerned about the widespread distribution of illegal guns and its profound effects on our culture."
Santorum criticized the Obama administration for turning "a blind eye ... to the scourge of illegal firearms" and for refusing to enforce gun laws.
"If elected President, I will appoint an Attorney General who will do so," Santorum writes. "While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor gun manufacturers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum Administration."

That statement isn't true, though. Yes, the distribution of obscene material is prohibited, but the definition of what makes something obscene is rather vague (see Miller Test). There has been no official ruling that hardcore commercial pornography is obscene.
Yeah, while this might be true I am worried about his interpretation of said law. Something tells me he considers pretty much all porn "hardcore", and you know he considers the gay seks porn hardcore and "ewwy".
Fixed that for ya.
Fair enough, but my point was that contrary to the OP's title, based on the comments on his site Santorum isn't looking to "ban porn" by creating new laws.
"It contributes to misogyny and violence against women."
Since when does he care about either of those things? He's one of the most misogynist figures I can think of.
I know DH isn't the first person to say this, but he's convinced Santorum is gay and is fighting w/ all of his power to deny it, so he's going against everything he can to "prove" he's not gay.

I concur. I just finished reading "handmaid's tale" last night based on recs from this board and it is so scarily coming true in so many ways.
In all fairness, this reminds me of the post about pampering vs. oppression from yesterday. I don't think Santorum's intentions are misogynistic. I actually think they are the opposite. I think he truly thinks he is protecting women.
The one from earlier in the week? Is it still on the first page?
This guy is just obsessed with sex, isn't he?
Wait what are all of us schleps who have been sleeping with our partners 10+ years suppose to do now to spice it up? Stop taking my fun away RS!
