Paint specifically. It's supposed to be our formal dining room but we're not using it for that (obviously) We are using it as a desk/office/china hutch room. I know that's weird but we have a nice enough hutch that we inherited with our first house purchase.
The room is attached to our living room and pics are taken from the living room. Living room is painted Behr Village Square. This room is currently wallpapered and needs to be taken down. It's not in great condition/they put it up poorly.
So... how would you paint this? One wall is the Village Square because it's the long wall from the living room. What do I do with the other two? Just paint the same color or what?
Excuse the mess The desk is going to be painted, at some point this summer. I'd love to paint the hutch too because I hate it, but dh loves it.
ETA: that clock was thrown up there because dh wanted it up and we haven't found a place for it. The nail was there so the clock went there
Re: What would you do with this room?
Not paint related, but I would suggest flipping the placement of the hutch and the desk. I know you don't like the hutch, but it has a great large scale to it, and the current desk wall is calling for something of a bigger scale. Maybe you can paint it? Then it would be a great focal point.
I know that accent walls are very highly debated on this board, but to me, this space is the perfect example of when an accent wall could really work. Paint the two side walls of the space the same color as the living room and the back wall a fun color. It looks like your kitchen is a light gray/blue??? Maybe a darker gray blue would be fun?
Do you have any accent colors in your living room? You could also have some real fun with a bold, fabulous wallpaper on that back wall. : )
The desk is actually pretty huge! I know it's not tall but it's big.
The kitchen is a light blue/grey- more blue than grey though. I don't have any real accents in the living room yet. I'm still looking for the right fabric to recover a chair and replace the curtains- that will give me the accent color, I hope.

I would paint the wall parallel to the long wall the same color and do something else with the back wall, be it a different color, a cool wallpaper, or maybe painted wallpaper?
I would paint the hutch and put it on the back wall, and paint the desk the same color to "merge" them. You could also paint or paper the back of the hutch.
I would also suggest a chair pad, maybe one of the bamboo pads I saw recently at Staples, that would help define the space.
If you move the hutch you will need to hang something above the desk. Message board, clock (not the current one though) or a piece of artwork.
I would also make sure you are adequately lit in the space, so a desk lamp and maybe under cabinet style lighting in the hutch?
i agree 100%.
i wouldn't necessarily paint the hutch & desk the same color, but ones that work well together. i really like the suggestion of painting or papering the back of the hutch. if you do that, you could pull from that accent to do the other piece of furniture (i.e., if the hutch is white w/the back w/orange as the paint or main paper color, then paint the desk a warm color that works with the orange).
with all of the paint on the walls and the accent wall, i don't really think it will need more definition. however, if you feel you need it for function--go for it, imo.
i agree with both of these, unless the clock could be updated with a paint treatment, too.
I don't really like accent walls so I would paint them all the same color.
I would then buy a new light fixture.
It doesn't look like there would be enough space to center the hutch if you swapped places. That desk looks deep enough, and then when you factor in the room needed for the chair that the hutch would have to be placed far enough back that it would be off center.
I think a better solution would be to center the desk more on the wall and install some floating shelves above it to create a focal point/visual interest.
I'm not a fan of painting nice wood furniture. I'd probably pick a more colorful wall color like blue or green so the wood tones look nice against it.
I'm not sure what a chair pad is, is it like a rug or a pad for the chair seat??
