Yet another cabinet post (PIP)

I hate my kitchen cabinets. They're the builder grade, run of the mill cabinet. I have two problems with them. First, I hate the color. Everything in my house has brown and/or gray in it (the stone wall in the living room, the stone wall in the kitchen, the tile, etc). Yet for some reason, my cabinets are reddish in color.

I do not want to paint them- way too much of a project. Is there some glazing treatment or something easier than painting that I can do to darker them and change the color (I'd like them to be brownish in color- preferably an espresso color).

Second, I am not even sure if I can install hardware because the frame isn't that far from the edge of the cabinet (the flat part is only 7/8" wide). Have you seen hardware put on cabinets with a frame this narrow?

Thanks for your help ladies! I hope you are enjoying your Saturday!

Re: Yet another cabinet post (PIP)

  • Sorry I'm no help but just wanted to say I loooove those cabinets!
  • Honestly, those cabinets are beautiful. I wouldn't touch them.

  • I think your cabinets are beautiful. You want to trade for my mid-90's oak? :)
  • Ditto, those cabinets are really pretty! I think you might be able to get away with a thin pull.
  • I appreciate the comments but the truth is, they go with nothing! The backsplash, tile, etc are all brownish. I just think the red is out of place. I searched posts and saw something about rustoleum. I wondered if their cabinet kit would work?  Thanks!
  • Honestly glazing or staining them would be just as much work as painting. However if you hate them as much as it sounds, it would totally be worth it to do something with it. Changing it to match what you have in your house would make a huge difference and make you happier, so go for it! I think staining them the espresso color you want would be really pretty, and it's not that hard. Just commit a couple of Saturdays and do it!

I thought about staining them but have no idea what they're made of so I'm kind of nervous about that. For some reason, slapping some glaze on them (I know it's not that easy) sounds less daunting.  :)

You could try a tinted glaze to tone down the red, or you could use a gel stain.   It may take a couple of coats of the gel stain...one coat usually makes it look kind of weird, but two or more coats makes a big difference.

I think your cabinets are pretty, but I understand what it is like to live with something that just doesn't work for you.

I forgot about gel stain! It's like magic. No dripping, no mess. I've used it before and rubbed it in with a rag. Definitely do multiple coats until you get the darkness you want. As long as they are solid wood  you don't need to know the type of wood. Different wood absorbs stain differently, so I'd start with a hidden corner to see how it takes. Or maybe stain the back of a door so if it doesn't work out how you want at least it'll be hidden.
