Deciding on Paint Colors?

I'm looking for some ideas for painting in these three rooms.  We'd like to use Sherwin Williams if you have a particular color you like, but really I'm just pretty open to any suggestions at this point.  I know we'll go neutral, but I'd like some color to the paint.  How do I decide if I want to go warm or cool?

Also, what are some of the differences between warm neutrals and cool neutrals  I get that the shades are either cooler or warmer, but I'm talking about for a room. Does one make a room seem smaller?  More open?  We recently purchased a house that is a pretty standard colonial.  Rooms are open and flow really nicely, but it's not like it's just one large space either.  Rooms are defined, but transitions from one room into the other with out small doors, does that make sense?

Dining Room

These pictures are of a house we just purchased with sellers things in them.  We'll also be redoing the carpet in the two rooms, so that won't play a role in our paint choice.  Entry way flows into the living room, turn left into dining room, straight ahead from there is the family room.  So from the dining room you see into both the family and living rooms.

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Re: Deciding on Paint Colors?

  • what colors are your furniture? my neutral colored walls are a cool grey, but I have all cool colored furniture. blueish grey couch, most other things are black my coffee table is an old aluminum trunk. so, I went with a cool grey paint color. my paintings tend to the cooler side of the spectrum as well.

you might need to warm it up depending on what you put in the space

  • As of now we really don't have that much furniture.  We have one long couch and recliner in a chocolate brown faux suede.  Tables are are a medium brown/black mix with black legs.  Dining room table is a medium brown wood, but we use a table cloth since it's so old.  You do see the frame of the chairs, but it's not much.     We'll need new furniture and decorations for the rest of the house pretty much since we're just coming from a condo.

  • I read that you should put warm colors in small spaces. I think with larger spaces it depends on the lighting, but don't recall specifics.

Good luck. Paint is probably the thing stressing me out most right now (we're moving from a two bed rental to a four bed house). I would suggest taking it slowly if you can.

  • Paint is the easiest thing to match to the rest of the space. So pick upholstery and carpet/rugs first, then paint to complement them.
