Keratin Treatments (that straighten)
Do Keratin treatments straighten hair? I know they reduce frizz, but I would love to not have to straighten or drastically reduce straightening time. How long do they last if you wash your hair every other day and use the shampoo they give you with your treatment? My hair is straight, with a slight wave and I straighten it after every shampoo...Thanks for your responses!
Re: Keratin Treatments (that straighten)
They do straighten, but its not wash and go - I still have to blowdry but I havent needed to flatiron since doing the keratin treatments.
It lasts about 3mos, but I noticed a bit of a shampoo effect and went 6mos+ since the last one.
I have very curly hair naturally, so take this fwiw.
If I do not blow dry my hair, it is much straighter but it's still not smooth and really straight. If I blow it dry, it's very straight. Drying time went from 20 minutes to 5 so blowing it dry is NBD. It's been 6 months since my last treatment (due to pregnancy) and it's just at the point where I do need to run a flat iron through it bc my roots are curly and it's starting to get a touch frizzy. If I do run the flat iron through it, though, zero frizz and it stays frizzless even though it's already 90 degrees and humid here. Prior to my last one, I had it done every 3 months for 1.5 years.
I haven't heard this but there are a ton of different brands. Only one is actually Brazilian Keratin. I've done several different brands (I think 3?), the last 2 of which were a completely formaldehyde free. From what I've heard/read, the biggest problem is for the stylists, not for the customer. Still, definitely something to be aware of and research before doing it. I will be doing new research when I'm ready to do it again since everything about these seems to change so fast and it will be a while before I can do another one.
I have heard this for all brands and was so freaked out by the research that I stopped doing the treatments. I had done about four before I started researching.
The big problem is that many beauty products are not regulated the same way food and drugs are regulated by the FDA. I would be wary of these treatments.
Here's a couple articles just doing a quick search for "Keratin hair treatments safe":

I know that some salons refuse to do these treatments, and even some stylists who work for salons who offer it refuse to get trained and do the service, because even though it's a big money maker for them personally, the health risks for them are too much.
Pomegranate Margarita
My Aveda salon has one that's 70% natural and formaldehyde free.
I'm sure it's SAFE but definitely no formaldehyde.
