intrigued- mayo on bread for grilled cheese instead of butter?

Was just reading something about different ways to make grilled cheese & it listed a 'diner' grilled cheese as spreading mayo on the bread before grilling instead of butter.

thoughts/experiences?

Yeah it's really good. 

A restaurant that I  worked at a few years ago  would make their croutons by tossing the bread cubes with caesar dressing (mayo with seasoning essentially) before toasting them. Amazing.

I use it for grilled cheese, and mix it into butter for garlic bread too!

I haven't tried it with mayo, but I've heard of it.

I have tried using pesto instead of butter.  Delicious!

I've never tried it, but I hear about it periodically.  I think I may have to give it a shot sometime.

Just seems so much easier to spread on than butter and the fat is probably around the same (not really sure?).... I imagine it just gives it a nice golden crust  & doesn't taste like mayo right? I will definitely be trying it...

My mom would always make the grilled cheese normally but right before serving would smear mayo on top.  It was great.
