Hey everyone, I've been on this board a little before, but mostly just lurk now. MH is ADAF and has applied for retraining to become a loadmaster. I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with applying for retraining and how long it has taken in the past. I know it depends on different things, but I just wanted to get a general idea of the timeframe. We are trying to decide if he wants to reenlist or not, and if he gets the approval, he is going to reup. TIA for any help!
Re: AF Retraining
It was a different situation for H, but the whole process took nearly 2 years. In his case he had a medical issue that was a dis-qualifier for his job. So, there was the time of rehab and then waiver submission which took about a year.
Once the waiver was denied, so he had a requirement to cross train, it still took 8 months to get an assignment. Once we moved, he still didn't go to school for another few months, despite actually doing that job once he arrived at the new location.
Some of the delay was intentional, as they were going through a RIF and wanted to protect H. Then there was some delay due to bureaucratic bs that probably doesn't apply to most people.
All that to say, who knows for you. I know it's different on the officer side, and that's where most of my anecdotes come from. My enlisted friends who have cross trained haven't shared the details of timing.
H got the 'pre approval' within like 48 hours. It then took about 5 days to get all the things he needed for his package (mostly the medical clearances and signatures) and submit it. It's been about 3 weeks and he gets an email every week saying that it hasn't been approved yet, but will be reviewed shortly.
A couple people in his shop have crosstrained and it's taken anywhere from 2 weeks to 9 months. I hate to say it, but it completely depends.
I hate being in limbo though.
DH retrained under different circumstances so I don't know how much this will actually help you.
His name was on the NCORP list, so he "voluntarily" re-trained. He was able to list 4 or 5 jobs from the critically manned list. It took him about two weeks to take care of all the requirements (flight physical, interview, paperwork, etc), and then he found out which job he was selected for about two weeks later.
His class start date wasn't until almost 10 months after the whole process started. He was in school for about 5 months and found out his assignment a month before graduating. I know a few prior service guys that actually found out their assignment before they left for school, so it varies. After he graduated he had about a month before his RNLTD to our new base.
Me too.
MH has been pre approved and submitted his package last week, after doing his flight physical, etc. So your H's package has not been approved by the personnel center in 3 weeks? I suppose that sounds about right...hurry up and wait! Well thank you guys for the info. I got the answers I was expecting, I appreciate it.
