Question for those who cook with gas

DH and I are in the process of selling our current home and buying a new one.  In our current home we have an electric range and oven.  One of the two houses we are really interested in has a gas range and oven.  I've cooked on gas ranges before but never in a gas oven.  Is cooking in a gas oven different from an electric one?  Will there be anything I need to do differently - ie adjust cooking temperatures/times?

Re: Question for those who cook with gas

  • you don't need to do anything different (at least I didn't) - you should test the oven temperature - put a thermometer in there to see if it's hot/cooler than the setting.
  • I have a gas oven, but I also have a switch to turn on a convection fan which is wonderful. For a gas only oven I was told that they are great for making pies, pizza etc b/c the bottom is usually hotter than the rest of the oven. I have cooked without turning on the fan accidentally and I haven't noticed any difference in temps or times. When baking you may want to rotate your items.
  • You shouldn't have to do anything differently with cooking times and temperatures. I prefer a gas oven because it heats more evenly and it tends to hold the heat better than electric ovens.

  • Nevermind...I reread the OP and you're only talking about the oven, not the stove.
