Anyone ever had a dog with Stud Tail?

Almost positive Pel has it, he's had a scaly/oily patch on his tail since we got him. Doesn't bother him, but it looks ugly. Our vet commented on the hair loss at his check up, but didn't call it stud tail & wasn't concerned about it. I found a link to a whippet with the condition and it looks identical to P's.

From looking online, washing the affected area & attempting to control the oil is the usual treatment for a mild case, can anyone recommend some products for us to try? I'll ask at the fancy local pet shop this week as well.

Re: Anyone ever had a dog with Stud Tail?

  • Nite's got it.  He's had it since the day we got him (July 1, 2011).  It looks dry and scaly, and the fur looks like it has snapped off (like, it's there, but it's very short...kinda like a burned down forest or something).

There are lots of threads about it on greytalk.

I guess it just doesn't bother me...we haven't done anything about it.  People in our rescue who have greys with bald thighs swear by Vitamin E and fish oil supplements.  Either throw in the food, or break the capsules open and rub on the affected skin.

  • That's exactly what it looks like, broken hair & all. It doesn't really bother me, but a few people  have commented on it in the past couple weeks and it made me feel like a bad mom.

He already gets an oil supplement in his food for his dry skin, so I'll see if the topical application helps.

Pel started blowing his coat this week because of the warm weather, so he's got a bald butt again, only a matter of time until he's almost totally bald (he has almost no fur in the summer, lol)
