WWYD: Porch

This is my ILs porch.  MIL is pretty immobile so I'd like to redo the porch for her so she can get out and get some fresh air and it be enjoyable.  I'd like to keep the whole project under $500.  I was thinking of trying to do that snap in wood tile decking that looks so easy but I think it will be too much of a project with the poles and the step.  Has anyone used a DIY stone/epoxy overylay?  The paint is coming up quite a bit. I'd also love to get some sort of drop down shade.  The space is approx 10x20.

ETA: Sorry for the huge pics. I copied the url from the thumbnails in photobucket.  I'm not sure how to change.

Re: WWYD: Porch

  • You'll have the really scrap off all of the peeling paint and acid wash the heck out of it before you put anything on there.  Whatever you put over the top will only hold as good as you prep the surface for it.  You might want to try a pressure washer as well.

We use the pro grade Rusteolium epoxy on our garage floor and love the result!  Lots of pictures and instructions here.  It has held up really well in the last year and a half.  You wouldn't want to use a water based epoxy (which is what most epoxies they sell in big box stores are).  HD did carry one solvent based epoxy but Menards had it for significantly cheaper per box.

I have no idea what "wood tile decking" is.  If I were going to do this, I'd sand off the paint that's there and repaint (with the right product!) in gray so the floor disappears.  Put down an outdoor rug and hang outdoor curtains on each of the poles.  Buy nice living room style outdoor furniture and accessories with lamps and flowers.  Inspiration here.

  • That's a nice space.  The only thing I see wrong with it is the floor.  I'd fix up that paint.  Then it just needs lots of nice flowers, plants and/or greenery.  I'd opt for lots of hanging plants with colorful flowers.  So nice of you to do this for her!!
  • I agree about reprinting floor and adding outdoor rug. I think I know what you mean w the wood tiles and I'd be worried about those not feeling secure under foot for a person with limited mobility.

The only thing I wanted to add is that maybe do some taller flower beds/pots so she can have something to tend to/look at that is at table level.
