bloated...gassy...

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has had these same problems as me: Lately, I have gained a couple pounds, I've been bloated 24/7, gassy 24/7, and I've had a loss of appetite. Sometimes when I eat my stomach has sharp pains. I'm going to try to only eat raw foods this week, and see if it improves. Has anyone here had anything like this? If so, what did you do about it.  I was 5'4 and 108, and now I'm 112.5 within a week, that is a lot of weight gain in one week and I haven't weighed this much in 2 years, so that show you how often my weight doesn't really fluctuate. Another side note, I have juice everyday and usually this makes me feel better, but it has not relieved this gas.

Re: bloated...gassy...

  • When's the last time you took a dump?  The weight gain/bloating/gas could be from constipation if you're not as regular as normal currently.

  • I mostly lurk on this board but have been having the same problems as you.  I just had a stomach scope last week because the Dr thought I had ulcers.  Turned out I didn't but my stomach was inflamed and irritated.  She said I'm producing too much stomach acid as a result of a food sensitivity.  Now I'm supposed to journal my food so I can pinpoint which foods cause it.  I would recommend talking to your Dr for advice.

  • You need to go see your doctor today.

If anything, the fiber in raw foods will make your bloating worse.

  • How much water are you drinking? You need at least 64 ounces a day - drinking water will actually help your bloat go down.

  • Ditto PPs. Is it also AF week? I gain up to 3-5 pounds in water retention right before AF starts.

What's your diet like been the past week? Lots of alcohol? Eating out?

  • ditto seeing a Dr. --When was your last BM? (TMI, probably. but I ask every patient that, so it doesn't bother me, if it doesn't bother you) --  I wouldn't recommened taking a laxative or anything until you see a Dr.  - Unless you regularly take them and have experience w/ them.

ETA: only see a Dr. if it's been a few days since you've had a BM and if that's abnormal for you.

it is the week before my period but it is usually never this bad.

to get some questions out of the way:

On average I drink 60 oz of water a day, I probably shouldn't juice, my dad has history with gallstones, but last year I had an ultra sound to make sure I was fine and I was. I rarely drink alcohol, and I had some cookies and pizza this last week so I'm thinking that could be it. I'm debating on if I should juice or not today, I usually have 2 carrots, red kale, ginger, and an apple.

  • I'm going to make an appointment with my doctor for sure, I was just wondering if anyone else has had symptoms like these. I just reviewed my food journal for the last 2 weeks as well, and almost everyday I had a couple oreos/cookies/ or ice cream! It didn't feel like that was for two weeks. I have a very sensitive stomach and I'm sure this has a role in this bloating/ weight gain.

If the cookies & ice cream are suspect, I would try cutting those sorts of things out completely for a couple of weeks and reassess things after your period is over. Ditto on the raw foods - if anything, I'd say make sure your veggies are thoroughly cooked if you're feeling gassy. If you have beans/legumes, make sure they are prepared properly (12hr+ soak before cooking). Keep a dr. appt. in case diet doesn't resolve things but imo it would be hasty to go in before AF blows over. Gas-X a.k.a. simethicone can help with trapped gas that makes you bloaty and uncomfortable.

  • yeah I can't believe I ate cookies or ice cream almost everyday for 2 weeks! It didn't feel like it. Anyway I'm going to do this for a week and still keep my appointment like you said. Does Gas-x make you take a dump as well?

Gas-X consolidates little gas bubbles into larger bubbles so that it passes more easily. Lovely :) I don't think it will affect dumping in any way. Probiotics and ample water intake could be good in the poop department. YMMV with it, but plain kefir (a tart yogurt-like drink) is a great probiotic source if you tolerate dairy well. I wouldn't get the flavored kind, though... too much sugar would defeat the purpose. Probiotic supplements are another idea but they are kind of hit-or-miss.

I had symptoms *very* much like that.  I also figured it was food sensitivity. I tried probiotics, going off dairy, was tested for ulcers and celiac. It was none of those things.  go see a doctor, and don't let up until you no longer have GI pain. Not trying to scare you but women tend to blow off symptoms that we should probably be more vocal about. Hopefully it's just too many cookies :)

  • thank you everyone for all of your responses! :3
  • This sounds like h pylori. I have it myself and I had all of the above problems. Ps I'm not a doctor
  • While it could be food/diet related, unexplained bloating and weight gain can also be a sign of some serious issues including certain reproductive cancers. Therefore, you should make an appointment to see your doctor ASAP.
