Are light colored wood floors out?

We're moving into our new house in a couple of weeks and just found out that the carpet in the guest room/office needs to be removed due to mildew stains.  We're debating whether to just replace the carpet in there or tear the carpet out of all three bedrooms and put in wood flooring.  There's honey-colored bamboo flooring in the living room and dining room, so we'd match that for the three bedrooms.  But all I see in decor mags is darker flooring.  Is light too dated?  It's not my first choice of color, but we don't want to add any more expense to new flooring, and we don't really want to put new carpet in.  Thoughts?

  • I dont think wood will ever be "dated." Different color finishes will definitely come and go in popularity, but I wouldn't worry about it.

This.  At some point in updating your house you have to say enough already.  Trends are constantly changing and unless you have endless time, money and energy, you'll always be updating something that's now considered "dated".  But who cares?  It's your house.  And like pp said, wood floors have been around for ages and I don't think they are going anywhere.
  • I'd put in new floors to match the existing floor color.  It will look so much more cohesive to have all the flooring a similar color.  Dark floors may be the trend & beautiful but I hear people complain about maintaining them all the time. Seems they aren't very forgiving to barefoot smudges or dust.
  • I have no idea what decor mags show, but I hate dark wood floors (too hard to keep clean) and love light wood floors.  If I ever have a choice, I will always pick the light wood (not stained at all, just the natural color of the wood).
  • When we bought our house it has light bamboo flooring everywhere, with matching light colored tile in the kitchen. I love it! Even if some people think its out of style (which I don't) I like it and that's what matters. The only room that is different is our game room and that has a cherry wood floor....it's always showing scuffs and marks. I much prefer the lighter wood.
  • That's great to know about the darker floors being harder on upkeep.  I think we'll end up going with the lighter floors throughout the house; as pp mentioned, wood is timeless.  Thanks for the advice!

  • Have you figured out why there was mildew in the first place and fixed that problem? Moisture source needs to be stopped, no matter what kind of flooring you have.
