Do you clean your dog's crates? Chilly & Pepper don't eat in their crate. They only get treats in there as a reward for going in when told. For some reason though, the room they are in smells bad.
My dogs don't stink, so I don't know what it could be. Is it the bedding?
I wipe their crates down with clorox wipes from time to time, but maybe I need to do it more often. Use a different product? WDYD?
Re: How often
We probably don't clean the crate out enough, but she's hardly ever in it. When we do, it usually only if she's made a mess in there, which hasn't happened in over a year. We used bleach for messes - though if I were to do it knowing what I know now, I'd likely use NM or some gentle cleaner - and wouldn't let her back in the crate for a day or so after letting the crate air out.
We toss her bedding and any stuffed toys that have received excessive attention into the washer every few months, but again, she maybe uses her crate for a few hours once or twice a week, when she wants to get away from H and I.
Do you have an airline crate or metal crate? If it's an airline crate, you could try taking it apart, cleaning it, and letting it air outside for a bit?
They are in their crates a lot. During the day while we're working & overnight.
It sounds like you're on the right track suspecting the bedding. Wish I could be more help! Usually when there's a funky smell I clean anything cloth first by either throwing it in the washing machine or using a vaccum and febreeze, and then throw open the window for a few hours. Over-time, I have noticed that even though G doesn't stink her bedding (and crate), and the throw blankets and throw pillows that she sleeps on on the couch, do start to smell like dog.
Their bedding gets washed once a week. Really, everything gets washed once a week in our house.
One dogs eats in his crate, they sleep in their during the day, and sometimes choose to hang out in them at night. We have plastic airline crates. Our dogs don't stink-they're raw fed- but, their bedding will get dirt and other things on it that can start to smell a bit. We normally use a hydrogen peroxide/water mix to clean their crates (because of the raw meat).
