Would these work well for spice storage? PIP

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out an efficient, organized way to store my spices.  I store them in a cupboard and I don't want a rack.  I don't have a good drawer to lay the cylinder shaped ones in, and because I like to be able to stack them, the cylinder-shaped ones wind up shoved all over the place in my cabinet.  So I had the idea to use the small, wide-mouth ball canning jars (I think it's the half-pint size).  WDYT?  Is this an awesome idea like I think it is or would it wind up bugging me for some unforseen reason?

  • It all depends on the size of the cupboard and the amount of spices you own. In theory, almost anything could work, but it has to work for you. I like drawers instead of cupboards for two reasons: 1. i like them laid out where I can look at them, and 2. I'm short, and cupboards tend to be high and deep necessitating a chair.

I have tons of spices but luckily a lot of cupboard space...it's the best place near my workspace when I'm cooking too, and I don't have many drawers.  I really have been trying to find a way to use that cupboard because it's a disaster area now but it's the perfect amount of space for all my spices.  I think I could stack them 3-high and 3 or 4 deep since they're so squat, and just keep the ones I don't use as often near the back.

I really think it's perfect.  I just wondered if anyone had tried it or anything.

  • It seems like it would work, but it seems like there are containers that might be cheaper, lighter, and easier to open.

Like these, which are pretty cool and not a bad price, although you wouldn't be able to slide a container out of the middle of a stack.

I just got these and like them:

  • I think it is kind of a pita when you have to stack and unstack them to find the one you need.

If I didn't have a drawer to use for spices, I think I would look into these.

With something like this, you could label the fronts to know what's on the shelves, i.e. top row would be the back and bottom row could be the front.

Oh yeah, now I remember one of my big reasons for possibly moving to the 'burbs.

Anyway, I think they would work just fine, and you should be able to get them for a good price.

That's what I'm thinking...good price, and since I've started buying so many spices in bulk I need to buy some type of containers anyway, not just organize my existing ones.  Plus I get annoyed with the narrow tops on the cylinders sometimes (assuming I"m actually measuring lol).

Also, yes, you should move to the burbs.  West/Southwest preferably.  And invite me over for lunch.

You do have a point here. '

  • Not sure I can explain this well, but I'll try.  Those jars are sort of slippery.  I mean, they don't really play nice when stacked.  They sit on top fine, but the rounded glass bottom against a metal top is weirdly slippery.  I feel like one nudge to an adjacent column and they'd tumble.  They just aren't designed to stack and stay.  If you could rig up something to corral them a bit, I think they'd work.
