Confining a cat to retrain re: litter box

If you have ever done this, how many hours per day did you keep the cat confined?  Our cat Riley has litter box issues and we are working to retrain him.  I confined him in the guest room today with food, water and a litter box with Cat Attract.  There's also a feliway diffuser in there.  The bed is partially covered with garbage bags so he can't pee on it but there's a place for him to curl up and sleep.  How long should I keep him confined each day?  Is a work day long enough?  I just feel so guilty about locking him up in a bedroom by himself all day and I'm worried that he will catch on fast and hide from me in the morning after this happens a couple days.

  • I'm doing all work day and all night - whenever I'm not awake to keep an eye on her. I feel guilty too so I hear ya!  Last night I tried confining her to my room instead over night and she peed twice in the box and apparently none on the carpet - yay! Maybe success is near?

A tip I read about the bed is to put a water proof shower curtain on it.

  • When we were retraining S, I think it was about a week.  We used a dog crate and after a couple of days, she was allowed out when we could supervise her.  Have you thought about Cat Attract litter? We have used it with good luck in the past.

ETA:  reading fail. I see that you are using Cat Attract.
