New neighbor open house?

We moved into a new home in October. We were the first to move into this phase of our neighborhood, and since several more families have moved in. We were talking about hosting a little get together so everyone can meet each other.

Couple of questions.

Would 4pm on a Saturday be an okay time to host this type of party? (Casual, back yard, open house style.) I don't want to plan it during a meal time. I was thinking about asking everyone to bring a snack/app/sweet, if they wanted to.

We would provide beer, wine, lemonade and water. If anyone wanted something special to drink, they would be welcome to bring it.

Thoughts?

Re: New neighbor open house?

  • I would do something closer to the 2pm area if you do not want it to be around a mealtime. 4pm is cutting it too close to dinner.
  • If you don't want a meal time don't do it at 4.  If there are a bunch of families with younger kids I'd go to 3.  If it's more young adults you could even do an evening 7-8ish.

Food and drink wise I think you'll be good.  I'd be prepared to have some stuff to put out yourself.  My new neighborhood has a 4th of July potluck.  The divy up what people bring by their last name.  I don't know how many people or how well it works, but just a thought.

  • 2pm if you want to avoid mealtime.
  • 4pm is too close to dinner to not serve a meal.  I would have it around 2pm.

  • You need to provide some sort of food. Even if it's just having out chips and salsa, cheese and crackers, and/or veggies and dip when your guests arrive.
  • I think it's a great idea, but like PPs suggested I would move it to 2pm.

  • Thanks for the feedback, ladies. I was trying to avoid naptime with the 4pm start since there will be several families with small children invited. I bet we can compromise with a 3pm start and hope our girls are awake by then, LOL!

And I'm sure we'll have some food. MH and I both love to cook, and I can't imagine not putting out some stuff ourselves!

  • I think it's a great idea and I'd say something like "please bring a snack to share."  JIC nobody brought anything, I would have out a couple things myself.

I'd probably do it at 3 pm.  I feel like 2 pm's right in the middle of my afternoon errands, but somehow that hour makes a difference :P
