Primer over samples?

Even though it goes against me cheap ways, I've decided to buy samples for wall colors for our bedroom since I have it narrowed down to three colors.....two tan/griege colors and a light blue. We have a dark plum color on the walls now, so I know it'll need a coat of primer, but will I have to paint over the samples with primer again before painting on the color we choose? Just curious...

Re: Primer over samples?

  • You'll want to sand down any spots that are uneven (if you get a drip or something).  I would primer over them because you don't want to take the chance of having a blue tinted area on your wall.  My parents didn't prime my old bedroom before painting it and I had stripes that were a similar tone, you can still see one stripe if you knew they were there.

  • Yes, I would primer over the samples once you decide on a color.  We recently repainted our family room, put up a coat of primer, samples, then primer and color again.  It'll look much better and uniformed.

  • When we did our basement, I just sanded down the area I painted with the sample to "thin" it out, and then painted over the whole thing.  You can't tell.  Granted, it was the same color that I went over with the new paint.  If you're painting 3 samples, I would at least prime over the two that don't match.  Does that make sense?
