Carpet in basement?

So, I'm getting quotes this week for new carpet in our main basement family room.  Do I need to specifically ask for a vapor barrier in the quote or do companies use different padding in a basement?  Anything else I need to check before getting quotes?

Background: Basement has old (1950s/1960's) linoleum tile over the concrete floor - we are not removing since it likely has asbestos and is in good condition and will instead have carpet installed over the linoleum.

Re: Carpet in basement?

  • We used to recommend a floating floor system like dricore.  It will allow air flow to circulate underneath to prevent mold growth.

Another idea is to put in a radiant flooring system and tile over top so it would be warm underneath and you don't have to worry about carpet growing mold.   It would be more expensive initially but you wouldn't have to keep replacing it like you would carpet.

Yu would want to have the linoleum tiles abated first. The tiles don't have asbestos, typically it is the black mastic underneath that contained the asbestos.

  • I would definitely let them know that you're installing in a basement and see what they recommend for a moisture barrier.  In our case, we just upgraded to a nicer carpet pad, and it came with a moisture barrier on the back of it (they didn't advise us one way or another....I just knew I wanted nicer padding, and that was an added "bonus").  Depending on your area, they might recommend something more.
