overblown trends or new classics (LIP)

Re: overblown trends or new classics (LIP)

  • Jennasue's bathroom is the first photo.
  • I thought it looked familiar. It's a great bathroom.
  • Interesting read. I defiantly think people follow trends a tad to much. But in the case of appliances.......Who cares if its trendy pick? They will all need to be replaced in 10 years or less anyway. LOL Nothing is built to last these days.

  • If you don't like it, it is an overblown trend, but if you love it, it is a new classic. Wink
  • I agree granite is practical. And industrial appliances are just awesome and fun to use.

I feel like stainless steel may have an end because it's not so easy to clean. But it is shiny, and who doesn't like shiny?

I personally don't like vessel sinks and feel like they already look dated.

  • I think how the material is used makes a HUGE difference between trendy and classic. Kitchens are a super good example of that - a long bank of cabinets that are exactly the same height and depth, with brown speckled builder basic granite and a taupe stone backsplash - it's going to look it's age. Hell - anytime there's a standard, 'builder basic' anything, it's going to look dated.

But a unique granite (I actually really, really don't like granite personally), cabinets with some interest, some function, some custom (or custom-look) aspects, wood tones that are less common...and so on and so on - that can look fantastic and have more staying power.

I think that a lot of people fear that anything too unique will date faster and so they stick with safe options for timelessness. But really, few things are ever timeless. And I think that safe tends to become typical, and as soon as any look becomes too overdone, it dates itself.

And I think practicality influences classic more than anything else. I loved the look of vessel sinks a few years ago...until I lived with a few. Splashy and messy and harder to clean and huge space wasters. Granite (whether I like it or not) on the other hand holds up fantastically. Easier to make an investment in it and lasts long enough to make it easier to view as a more classic piece.

But honestly - I pay little attention to any of that and choose things I love. I spend less money on the stuff that I know I will get tired of so that I can update it whenever I want, and invest in the pieces I adore that will work for me. That way, I seldom stress the trendiness of it.

  • I also think the term "granite" has become over generalized for some people, particularly on house hunters.  I feel like when they say they want granite they just Don't want laminate or corian.  Sme granites are busy, some aren't. I personally love the look of certain honed granites, and the black granite that was in our house when we bought it is fairly uniform.

I think a lot of those other ones are just personal style choices.  It's nearly impossible to tell what's going to be in or out ten years from now!

  • lol

we have a floating vanity in our guest bathroom. if we get around to our master bath, the vanity I like happens to be floating as well.

  • The floating vanities look like they belong in ugly hotel rooms, IMO.  Blech.

I don't like the busy granite but no one that I know IRL has granite as busy as some of those pics.  Most that I have seen IRL are fairly uniform in color.

  • I can't believe how many people complained about vessel sinks being hard to clean.  WTF?  We had a clear vessel in our last master bath, and white vessels in the guest, and they were always, always clean.  My secret?  I kept a hand towel on the sink and dried the sink after each time I used it.  It took 2.6 seconds.  Rocket science, I tell ya.

Also, granite and SS appliances have been around for decades....I don't see how they are trends.  There are only so many colors in which to make appliances.  I hardly see a red/green/blue/purple refrigerator and stove being the new stainless steel.
