WDYT? Gift registries...

WDYT about people registering for:

DVD players

iPods

Digital cameras

GPS systems

etc.

I'm just giving general examples, I don't mean specifically.  How do you feel about it?  Are some of these items ok?  Some not?

Re: WDYT? Gift registries...

  • I might say yes it's okay if this is a couple getting married who both already have homes and everything they need for a home, and therefore would like 'extra' things.  Maybe it wouldn't be so shocking if they just asked for Best Buy, VISA, or AMEX gift cards on a registry or something, since most people have trouble buying those things for themselves.  I know I wouldn't buy someone something that I want, but can't afford, instead of getting it for myself.  But I would love to give them a gift card to help them buy it.
  • Yeah those things are a little extreme for a wedding registery IMO.  I have a former friend who when she got married register for a big screen TV.  Who is going to give you that at your shower??  And I have distant relative who got married recently who registered for the whole store pretty much.  One thing that sticks out is fishing tackle.  WHY would a married couple want fishing tackle on their registry?  I wish I can remember everything that was on that registry but I remember most of it was out there.
    Siggy coming soon....
  • I don't necessarily think you should register for those type items.  It seems like they are more luxury/want items than things you are going to need.  Maybe a digital camera, but that's still just a maybe to me!  I just think that it seems selfish if you expect someone to buy you a GPS or an iPod for a shower gift. Just my opinion!  I agree with the pp about gift cards though...that's more subtle.

With that said...Jarrett went online and added iPods to our Target registry without me knowing.  He just did it as a joke and knew I would flip out.  They didn't last very long on our list once I found out!  He did say that we needed to add them at the end since we would get 10% off of whatever was left on the registry.  Well, we didn't bc I didn't want anyone to think I had done that!
  • I feel like showers have become a bit of a gift grab lately.  People can register for whatever they want, but I wouldn't buy anything you listed.  The same goes for high priced baby items.  The 10% discount just isn't worth it to me and most people don't realize you get a discount and think you really expect them to buy it.
  • DVD players- I think DVD players are a great registry item.  They're relatively cheap nowadays so I would think that someone would buy this.

iPods definitely, I wouldn't necessarily put the really expensive ones on there, but a lot of people in the wedding could pool together to get an ipod for someone.

Digital cameras This one is tricky, there are some relatively cheap digital cameras out there, yet I don't think I'd buy this for someone, mainly b/c I'm picky and want to pick out my own camera.

GPS systems A parent might buy this if it's on the registry or the whole wedding party could pool together to get this.

With all that said, if there's big items and small items on a registry then I think that's fine, yet if it's only big ticket items, I think that's kind of tacky.  The couple will end up w/o anything off the registry b/c a lot of people can't afford to give nice gifts right now. I don't think any of these things are inappropriate on a registry b/c people put china on there registry and that can get really pricey.  Cookware and bedding can add up really quick too.

  • amy0887--Right! I totally agree...DH was kidding and trying to get me in a tizzy anyway, but still I didn't want anyone to think I was trying to be selfish on our registries!
  • i really think it depends but i can definitely think of other things that would be more practical.
  • When I think of a wedding registry....I think of things for your home....like bedding, cookware, etc!  I think they are a great idea...but have gotten waaayyyy out of hand!

  • IMO--sounds like a Christmas wish list to me!
