Sisal & Cats, talk me down

Remind me how bad of an idea this is when you have these:

For under the dining table, I really want this diamond jute rug

I should be smart and get this outdoor rug instead, right? The dining table is in the center of the great room and gets a lot of foot traffic. The added advantage being it's washable .. the big one tends to have muddy paws.i'm not in love with it though...

I have this one already in the living area, which I love (and they don't destroy) and would consider re-using, but it's pretty thick and wouldn't work well with moving chairs.

Re: Sisal & Cats, talk me down

  • We had a natural fiber/weave laundry basket, our cats totally destroyed the sides in about 2 weeks.  My cats have also completely destroyed our solid wood railing post too, so maybe they are just assho!es?  We have an indoor/outdoor rug in our dining room and it has held up really well over the past 5 years to 2 cats, 2 dogs, and a toddler.

  • I have a sisal runner in my entry running from the door to the coat closet and neither of my cats have every done anything to it.  It has held up pretty well over the last 7 years considering how rainy it is here, plus DH parks his wet bike on it every day.  There are a few spots on it, and is darker than it was in the beginning, but other than that is okay.

I have found that the cats will scratch the heck out of the coir door mats I use outside though.

  • First, don't buy sisal.  It stains and is ruined forever.  Get seagrass instead.

Second, do your pets claw and scratch?  My cat is declawed but "scratches" at the furniture all the time, yet he's never shown any interest in the rug.  Our dogs' nails haven't snagged the rug either.

I wouldn't get an outdoor rug if snags are your concern because they're woven like berber carpet.  One snag and the entire row is unraveled and the pattern is ruined.

For a natural rug, look at naturalarearugs.com.  Google for a coupon.  I ordered from them 2 years ago and the rug's held up great and was SUPER affordable.

  • My cats are total dickheads but they don't mess with the braided jute rug in our DR! They're front declawed but still paw at the furniture like TH's, but not the rugs. One of the dogs, on the other hand, likes to lay on his side and wave his claws like a maniac on the rugs, but he prefers the soft shag rug in the LR (such a goofball)

Really, unless you have those natural fiber scratching posts for your cats (which feel and look so similar to the natural fiber rugs) I think it should be fine!
