Do I have to re-sod?

Our back yard is almost entirely crab grass, weeds, and wild chives. I'm wondering if there's a way to remove the existing problem and add grass seed? Will I just have to tear it up and re-sod?

Re: Do I have to re-sod?

  • we chose to re-sod as our backyard is small.  It was about $1500 and totally worth it.  The crew came in with a sod cutter and cut out the top 6 inches of our yard, removing all the weeds.  We did NOT want any chemicals put down to kill the weeds, so this was a great alternative, and quick!  We have some low lying areas that collect water and it  flows to the neighbors yard, so re-seeding was not an option.

we did lose some of the sod over the summer to the horrible heat, despite watering regularly.  But the type of grass they put in spread once it cooled down and we only had to re-seed a few patches this spring.

  • Anything you add in to kill the crab grass will probably kill the grass seed too. We had a yard like that that was about 2000 square feet and we were able to re-do it in a weekend ourselves.

Mow what you can, then rent a rototill and go over everything. Level and cover with sod (it's heavy but other than that really easy to do).  If you don't have a sprinkler system it would be a good time to put one in, I regret not doing it!
