What kind of clear protective coat with flat paint?

I have a china cabinet that was pretty darn ugly and I chose to repaint it.  I wanted a less than perfect, vintage look.  Initially I planned to go with Annie Sloan's chalk paint but it is too pricey.  I decided to take a chance and go with an off white flat paint to get a similar look.  After 2 coats it looks pretty good, but because it's not a gloss I want to put a protective coat on it.  What should I use?  I'm new to painting furniture so I'm not sure.  I figure if it fails on me I can sand and apply a glossier paint.  Just thought I'd try flat paint first.  TIA!
